Super Old Carseats at Garage Sales?

So I love garage sales.

But more and more I see really old used carseats at garage sales. Like man. dates like 10 or 15 years old.

Is it still legal to sell or does it have to be recalled to be illegal?

Does it depend on your state? I just really bugs me and I don't even think the old grandma and grandpas really even realize.

I always thought it was illegal to sell expired seats

I never bother saying anything and I see them all the time.

Judging from the other responses on the "do other people in your state follow the laws" thread, I know I'm not alone in seeing that most people just don't care anyway.

Yeah but I do say something. I'm a teacher and I like to at least attempt to teach things. I just want to not be wrong when I say something.

We are a pretty green place. We even have places to recycle used carseats.

I used to say stuff after ds1 was born and I started looking into car seat safety. I was mostly responding to craigslist ads. Most people ignored me or got angry and said they would put their kids in them because they thought they were perfectly safe, nice seats and all the expiration stuff was an excuse for parents to spend more money. So I quit.

I remember reading a thread on car-seat.org about the sale of them though. I'll try to find it because it was pretty back and forth with a lot of what ifs.

I wonder if you spoke to the person selling them and said "I don't know if you realize, but that seat is expired and isn't safe to use anymore. If you'd like, I will gladly take it off of your hands and dispose of it for you"
Then again, maybe it would look like you were out to get a seat for free (or cheap, if you're willing to pay) and then putting your own kids in it.

I tell the seller, but don't push it. Most of them don't care. If they put their kid in it, they usually aren't too concerned about it for other people's kids. It's not illegal where I live to sell expired carseats, but it's illegal to sell recalled items. I always want to lie (though I don't) and tell them the seat is recalled...
