I have a second hand Haro. It's metal, high quality and cost $50 because it was second hand through our friendly local bike shop. My daughter started at 18m so I'm guessing it would fit your son.

We have a strider and LOVE it. It's 7 lbs and mine all carry it up the hill. It's got a short height for short "inseams" and overall its great.

Re: Favorite Balance Bike

We have the chopper style for the smart trike balance bike.

We got it at xmas from ecomom(think they are having a 30% off sale, they sent me an email, but I haven't read it yet).

Anyway, the reviews on it on amazon were not great, but DS LOVES IT! I'm so pleased with it although I'd pass on the stand.

Got it at 2.5yrs, took a while to get the hang of it as it was winter, we let him go around the house. He also just got his cast off a few weeks before(small break in his leg) so I thought it might help strenghten his legs.

By now he is bombing along and has gotten the hang of pushing himself along and then lifting his legs off the ground for a bit, hence the balance part.

We always get a zillion comments from the neighbours and strangers as it's kinda fascinating to watch such a young child go so fast and have such good co-ordination.

At first I thought it was heavy, but I don't think it is really compared to other bikes. All bikes are a bit heavy.

I got this one on sale at Christmas time for $20. Jax loves it and rides all over the place, it is also light enough for him to pick up.

The Strider is supposed to be the best for tiny kids but I really want this one for Poppy:

Re: Favorite Balance Bike

oops, guess it's called smart gear,

This is ours:
http://www.ecomom.com/smart-balance-bike-chopper.html

I'd pass on the stand as it's not that sturdy and a 2 yr old will have difficulty parking it in anyway. I think you'd be better off building a simple U type shape stand from sturdy wood from home depot.

Re: Favorite Balance Bike

We have the Strider for our petite 19 month old. With the seat at the lowest setting she can finally have her feet flat on the ground. I researched a ton to find the shortest seat height. The one you linked is cute - but it looks like it lists the lowest seat height as 14".
