Lost and overwhelmed

So, we used lapbooks on animals from this site this year for Science: www.homeschoolshare.com and DD loved it! She chose the animal and we used books from the library and read about them online each week. We'd put together our lapbook at the end of the week. It was fun.

For reading/phonics, I actually got a used copy of Phonics Pathways to follow very loosely. We went outside and worked on it with sidewalk chalk with silly sentences. We used a wipe board. We played games (online and ones we made). We spelled with letters from a wooden ABC puzzle...

We have a foam puzzle with numbers and add/subtract signs that we used for math. I tried to follow the scope and sequence provided by Math-U-See so that she'd be ready to use the actual curriculum this fall.

For a brand new homeschooler, I really recommend Cathy Duffy's book 100 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum. It will help you think through what style of teaching works best for you and your child and your educational philosophy. I know that seems like a lot of work and maybe even unnecessary but it helps A LOT when trying to figure out what type of curriculum is best for your family. It's just unbelievable how many choices of curriculum there are and this book is very helpful in narrowing things down, imo. I wish I knew about this when I was first starting out. It would have saved me a lot of money and many hours of research (I tried way too many curriculums that don't work for my family).
