Going to Nutramigen from Alimentum

I found out that WIC apparently will only cover Nutramigen. I thought that they would do alimentum because that's what the WIC form said online, but it must be an old one. We're using alimentum right now after buying one can to test and see if she would be better on hypoallergenic formula. Will nutramigen be just as good? I hate switching her on formulas all the time, but we seriously cannot afford to use Alimentum at the moment.

I've never used Alamentum, but, nutramigin is working for my dairy allergic baby...her GI doc said they are similar...he slightly prefers alementum but said nutramigin would be fine since that what we could afford.

Re: Going to Nutramigen from Alimentum

The only difference would be if you were using RTF Alimentum as it is corn free (and Nutramigen is not). However, the powders are pretty similar. They are just two different brands of the same kind of formula and some babies do better on one or the other, while some can handle both without any issues. In my experience, most of the people I know who use hypoallergenic formula use Nutramigen. I think it is less expensive and more widely available. I know now they make a larger sized can which increases the cost savings. We have been buying it until we can get a prescription and get it covered by WIC.

Thanks! That's good to hear. We were using the powder form of alimentum too. We'll finish off the can though before starting nutramigen. There is no way I'll just stop using a 28 dollar can when it agrees with her.

You can mix the bottles half Nutramigen and half Alimentum for a few days to gently ease her over completely.

Oh yeah, I'll do that. She likes 4 ounce bottles on occasion too right before a long nap.

We always transitioned formulas this way We've used both Nutramigen and Alimentum powder and there isn't much difference. Both stink, Nutramigen maybe a bit worse.

I was going to say the same thing. Hope your LO does just as good on the Nutramigen!

If you have a script from your doctor, WIC will cover whatever formula you need.
