Re: Stripping Membranes

It took less than an hour for me to get regular contractions. But I had been contracting all through the night and it stopped. But for me it was perfect to get it going again. It is the only experience I've had with it.

I had mine stripped Friday. I'm not in labor, but I have had more contractions.

It was uncomfortable, but certainly not painful. Honestly, having the OB check my cervix last week was more uncomfortable than my MW stripping my membranes.

Re: Stripping Membranes

I have had it done several times during several pregnancies and it did absolutely NOTHING!

With DD, yes. Had them stripped at 9am and was admitted in labor at 7:30pm. She was born the next morning. With DS, my OB tried, but I was never dilated enough. I went into labor 48hrs after she checked me at 39+3.

Re: Stripping Membranes

Ina May Gaskin reports about a 50% success rate with a stretch and sweep, but I imagine there are a lot of other factors that have to be considered, like the experience and skill of the midwife, the condition of the woman receiving the S+S, the position of the baby, etc.
With baby #5 it definitely moved me from prodromal labour into active labour in very short order - about an hour. However, I've had mild contractions for a couple days now, and on and off for a couple weeks with this baby, and had a stretch and sweep done this morning without much effect so far. We'll see what the night brings, I guess!

Re: Stripping Membranes

With my ds I had my membranes stripped at a 10am appt. Started having contractions shortly after, 1pm went to the gym and walked a mile on the tread mill, 2pm started timing them, 4pm admitted, ds was born at 8:42pm same day!

Re: Stripping Membranes

I had mine swept at 5pm and my water broke at 1am. Little miss was born 3 hours later! So, about 11 hours after the sweep I had baby in my arms.
