No it's not odd. When I was still Doula'ing majority of my clients wanted me at their home for hours before going to the hospital. Sometimes they just needed me to tell them it was ok and everything was going smoothly, sometimes they needed me to help them physically stay on their feet and move around, and so on. Other times when Doula'ing I would meet them at the hospital and/or right before they would leave their home. But those moms were more experienced in birthing, it wasn't their first or second baby and wanted me mainly for the hospital since their movement would be restricted.

I agree with the pp's, it seems to me that the time at home would be the most needed! I went to the hospital WAYYY too early with my first and I wish I had had someone with me to keep me calm and encourage me to wait until I needed to go.

(I enjoyed reading everyone's helpful responses, btw!)
