Call the bank it was drawn on they will be able to tell you if the funds are available or not. I did this a few times when I sold Avon and had new clients give me a check

I agree with everything that's been said already and in the future- no checks! For all you know, that check isn't even hers. Or it is from a closed account or the account is already overdrawn, etc. Quite honestly, I'm surprised anyone even had the gall to ask to take something for a week without paying for it.

Totally totally agree. I hope not, but it seems she orchestrated this to get some money and leave you hanging.

Yes, you can call her bank and ask if funds are available to cash the check. I used to be a teller at a credit union. However, I'd probably still drive to her bank in this situation. If you do the funds will come out immediately. If you cash it and they aren't there, you're out your $$ plus the fees.

Just tell her you are meeting her today to pick it and give her back her check. You got yourself into this mess. That is the best way out. If you cannot get her to meet up, then you can cash the check and possibly pay more fees for it being bad, or just continue your 'being nice' legacy and let her have it free. I have given away hundreds worth of things I never intended on giving away before buying, but I did anyways.

Hope you were able to cash the check. I refuse to take checks for anything like that. We had friends who sold a car, the guy paid with a personal check, and it ended up bouncing, and he got off with a new car.
