My GI specialist also said gut a lot, but I think it was to help me understand better and to identify better with what he was talking about (I was in grade school at the time).
I understand utilizing the term with a grade schooler, but not in what is put forth as a medical/scientific/nutrition book. My son just finished 5th grade and his health course was so watered down that at times the information was stretched so far to make it easy to understand that it was wrong.

For example, his book referred to depression as a feeling. Well, yes, it sort of is. But, more technically, depression is a medical (psychiatric) condition and sadness is the feeling that they likely mean. So, he was asked to name several emotions/feelings and he listed depression. His teacher was previously in the psychiatric field and marked him wrong. Well, technically he was wrong. But, in 5th grade language, he was correct. This is where I see this Dr. Natasha stuff. Watering down major bodily systems into the "gut" waters down information to leave a lot of great soundbites and have little to back them up and aren't really "correct" when you dig a bit deeper.

Yes I agree. I don't like watering down medical terms. Saying "mommy has a baby in her tummy" is a pet peeve of mine. You can say womb and explain where it is.

If you had a child that you needed to put in the car, and the only options forward facing car seats, but rear facing were coming out months or years ahead, would you stick that kid in the car with no car seat at all? No, you would make do with what's there until something better is actually here.

I think I just have an issue with your saying that DTP is unsafe. It's not. Something with less side effects just came along.
Peer reviewed medical journals.
Not all are recent and it's a anti-vax site, but it was the quickest link I could find to a list of peer-reviewed info.

I think vaccination is a perfectly acceptable choice. I also think that parents are entitled to make the best choice for their family.

I don't vax, and while I am never disrespectful about it to anyone, I really don't care if that bothers you. It is a personal choice and the day the government starts mandating something so important as what injections we receive, well... That'll be the beginning of a frightening precedent.

Honestly, I'm more annoyed by the parents who smoke and pretend it doesn't affect their kids, or mine, at all. The government should mandate something about that long before they try to force any injections on my healthy children. I'm more annoyed by the parents who put soda in baby bottles or stuff their kids full of crap for food, which helps drive up obesity rates, as well as all sorts of diseases like diabetes. That affects me and my kids because it ultimately affects the cost of healthcare.

The issue is just too broad, I think, and so much of what other people do affects me and my kids too, even of it doesn't seem as "visible" as what you all see in the immunization issue.

On my own little tangent, I get annoyed with public school because it seems like a breeding ground for sickness. Before you cry for my beheading or want to tar and feather me, let me say that I realize that homeschool isn't for everyone. But, still, I find myself slightly annoyed with how sick they (and the daycare kids) stay. Especially in the winter. My husband is a Pastor so being an active part of the church community is something of a requirement for us, but it annoys me to no end when every Sunday for half of the year someone has something contagious. Geez. We have a lot of school teachers in our congregation too do we are always hearing about "what's going around" and it's gross. My choices aren't always popular, and sometimes my kids aren't in Sunday School because of this stuff. But really, it your kid has a fever and was diagnosed a day or two ago with something gross - why are you bringing them to a social function? Bah humbug. So all of you vax people aren't the only ones walking on eggshells to keep your kids well. I'm dancing around the whole darn herd to avoid the cooties, too. I guess it's part of life.

(And, in the 1950's, the CDC swore that cigarettes didn't cause cancer. Their record is tarnished a bit in my eyes )

Love this!! cdc and fda lost my attention a long time ago!

no I wouldn't if I thought that foward facing carseat itself could potentially harm my child just from being placed in it. I would stay home or find other arrangments

It's also possible that the term is more common in british english, but I'm not positive about that. I just know that I see evidence every day around me and in talking to people about their medical history that what is in that book is true.

A very hard subject for sure... We delay But We're on vacation now (in another state) and I've been so worried my kids with catch something with all the new germs and kids and airplanes and stuff. Praying they stay safe. They aren't also taking their probiotics and flax oil like usually gives them and makes me feel "healthier."

My MIL also gave me a scare telling me their is a whopping cough epidemic in WA and asking if my kids have that shot. Is that called something else besides whopping cough? I don't remember seeing that on a schedule?!

Whooping cough is the common name for Pertussis. It is called whooping cough because the cough (mostly when it is in young children) has a distinctive sound as they catch their breath after a coughing fit.

The childhood vaccination for Pertussis is DTaP.

The epidemic was declared over like a month ago. Kids are still at risk, obviously, but they lowered it from epidemic quite awhile ago. Try not to worry too much I have only talked to one person who knows one person who's kid has it at the moment.
