Putting baby to breast
When I had my boys I attempted to breastfeed but they just didn't take to it (twins born 5 weeks early). At 1 point in the hospital, 1 of my boys did manage to latch for a minute (using a shield) and after that I was able to pump more milk out of that breast than the other one for the remaining time I pumped. I plan on exclusively pumping this time around since I'll be going back to work after 6-8 weeks anyway. My question is - do you think if I put baby to breast on each side 1 time that it would help jump start my milk supply?
Thanks!

Re: Putting baby to breast
I would try and feed at the breast at least until your milk comes in. I think it would be hard to EP during the NB phase but if you've got experience with it it may work out for you.

Re: Putting baby to breast
I would breastfeed while with the baby...it's going to be a lot harder to EP if you have older kids running around...breastfeeding might be very easy - it is for some! Even if you want to EP...it can't hurt to put them to breast a little in the beginning, right?

Re: Putting baby to breast
I've been breastfeeding and pumping and I notice that I can get more with pumping after nursing (my little one is not a very effective nurser so I nurse and then give a bottle) than if I solely pump without putting baby to breast. Worth a try I'd say, milk making is not a mechanical process I've noticed, so much of it is affected by my emotions/stress level, so don't be discouraged if you get less at times than others.

Re: Putting baby to breast
Well, I breastfed her in the hospital and she has such an overactive suck that she actually scabbed my nipples up. OUCH! So i went to pumping when we got home and Olivia will be 3 months in 2 days. Now I pump at least an ounce per hour per side usually more. I have almost an entire 5 cubic foot chest freezer full of breastmilk and she hasn't had any formula since we came home from the hospital.
