I don't understand the blegh or the
when someone pronounces your child's name incorrectly if it's an uncommon name, especially if they're pronouncing the way the letters would be pronounced in the country you're in. Like the post above mine, just for example. Way, bay, cay, day, gay, hay, jay, Kay, lay, may, pay, ray, say, yay - those are -ay words pronounced ay. Don't be grossed out (because blegh is an onomatopoeia for getting sick) because the instinct of many people would be to call her Ay-luh. Please don't feel singled out. There are many posts in this thread that work the same way. Seamus - I'd never even seen it in print until joining DS. Siobhan, same thing. Forgive my only knowing English for wanting to say these names the way they're spelled. And yes, there are consonant clusters in American English that don't make sense. Phillip, for example, but any adult who can read has encountered ph = f before. A lot of these, we have not. ffsoapbox:

Re: Why do people make names hard??

To add, we also made sure there was NO nickname/shortened version of the name that could be used that we don't like. For example, I like the name Joshua, but husband didn't like "Josh". Another example, a friend named her son Remington, but is getting mad when family calls him Remi. Duh, if you didn't like the shortened version, don't name him that, because everyone is going to try to shorten such a long name.

You are misunderstanding me. I don't like the sound of her name mis pronounced; I don't believe everyone should get it right the first time. I know it's unusual

Re: Why do people make names hard??
<3 The only name my mom suggested with my daughter, was Kajsa. She said she had always liked the name : ) I'm glad you posted this, because I had totally forgotten about that, I need to write it down somewhere safe!

ETA: DS1 is named William Alexander. Very easily recognizable, but honestly he was named after his godfather and that 'a' middle name fit best (ex and I both have 'a' middle names and carried that on). Soon to be DS2 will be named Atticus. Haven't decided first or middle placement, or corresponding name yet. I anticipate minor mispronunciation, but I don't find issue with it tbh. Cultural names intrigue me. Variations used to, but now not as much as there seem to be trends (aiden, Hayden, brayden, etc for example). So unless it's something very unique I don't bother asking about the background. I think there's a big difference in ridiculous and odd. I like odd. Ridiculous, not as much. Like the woman that gave her child the longest name in the world; including continents and countries. Really? While yay for record holding, that's a bit much IMO. Love it!! That's what we do too! James is my husband's middle name and my brother's first name, so if people start to give us flack over naming our kid a "weird" name, we just explain it's both a family name and an homage to my hubby's Irish heritage. Of course hubby wouldn't budge on having John as a middle name, so I always wonder if someday someone will point out that our son should be Seamus Sean for consistency, instead of Seamus John. ![]() P.S. My co-worker is also of Irish descent, and his kids are Liam and Flannery. Now Liam is a very chic name, but this was 15 years ago when it was another "weird" name. Liam Seamus is beautiful! Flannery is his daughter's name and I so want to steal it.
