Breastfeeding and pain medicine
I need to get my wisdom teeth out. I don't think I can delay getting my wisdom teeth out much longer. They weren't hurting before but now they are, and one of them has started to break and is very sensitive. I was hoping I could put it off until he was over a year old after we introduce cow's milk, but he is going just 9 months.
Any recommendations for pain medicine that is (I will ask the dentist who is prescribing it also, but I'm not sure if breastfeeding and medication are within his specialty). I guess I can also email the pediatrician about safety, but I"m also a big baby when it comes to tooth pain. Last time I had a tooth pulled I was taking oxycodone for 3 days after, and according to the internet, it does pass into breastmilk. The internet also says that the risks to a baby should be discussed with a doctor - I'm guessing that means that some but not all babies will react? I'm not sure I want to take chances. DS doesn't like bottles either...this isn't going to be a fun 3 days for either of us. Even though I can give birth without drugs, when it comes to my teeth I'm a big baby.

I work postpartum as an rn and we give lots of pain medicine and pretty much they are all ok to take except for Tylenol with codine. Percocet and Vicodin are fine to take. It does pass thru the milk but since your only taking briefly the effects on baby are minimal. !!!

Re: Breastfeeding and pain medicine
That makes me feel better. I'll see if the pediatrician says its okay also. I am not looking forward to spending a few days pumping to discard milk while giving bottles. Hopefully once my teeth are out though my mouth will stop hurting and we can all get back to normal.
I wish I'd done this years ago. My dentist said as long as my wisdom teeth didn't hurt I could keep them...and who knew that they would start hurting 10 years later while I was in the middle of taking care of a new baby.

Re: Breastfeeding and pain medicine
Here's a list of AAP approved medications, including pain meds and anesthesia. There are several pain medications that are safe while breastfeeding. http://kellymom.com/bf/can-i-breastf...approved-meds/
In case your oral surgeon is going to use conscious sedation, here's a link about that and breastfeeding, too: http://kellymom.com/bf/can-i-breastfeed/meds/sedation/

Just wanted to add that your doctor or ped likely isn't knowledgeable about bf and medication and will tell you that you need to pump and dump. They honestly just don't know so just tell mothers that. If you are told that I would check kellymom and the Hale's book and go with that.

Almost all pain meds are fine for short term use while nursing. I know I took loads of pain meds after my c-section. Especially since your baby is older and able to handle any small doses they may pass into milk.
