I haven't read all the responses so I don't know if this has been said or not, but in our area children are not allowed to ride the buses until first grade.

Here is my thing she's a young kindergarten stu dent .Transition her to riding the bus when she's ready. When my boy was 4 I wouldn't have put him on the bus.She will get practice at it through field trips. My ds is turning 6 and i still am not putting him on the bus to school but he is the first pick up and would be on for an hour at 6 yrs old.

Re: Poll: Am I a terrible, mean mother?

My oldest went to kindy last year and my middle child (turns 5 in dec.) is starting this year. We are only 2 blocks from the school, so I walk them BUT if we were further away I would absolutely be driving them!

My kids have always been with me, hardly ever a sitter and we are military living very far away from any family so they truly were with just Me & DH 99% of their lives so far. I completely understand how you feel, its so hard to let someone else have them. The first day I just watched the clock all day long. It was the longest day EVER! I was so nervous to see his face at pickup and hear what he thought about school. He did great, loves school and was sad when the year ended last week. It was definitely harder on me than him, but I adjusted.

My girls take the bus, because they want to. I could drop them off and pick them up every day, but they usually prefer the bus. They are 6 1/2. I don't judge whether you do or dont, its up to the parent. our busses have seatbelts here and prek busses had 5pt harness type seat belt.

Eta: my girls school is k-2nd only so its mostly kids their age

When I went to K, I was set on riding the bus. So, my mom followed the bus to school every single day, haha.

I did the bus in kindergarten. However my grammar school was a bit better at it than yours sounds. They had teachers escort kinders out before the other grades so they made sure we all got on the right bus. We had name stickers over our seats so the subs knew who we were (and teachers checked our seating before we left school so no switcharoos!) And the names corresponded to the route. We also were not allowed off anywhere but our normal stop without a note from parents signed by the office. (If a bus stop, parents had to be present. Home, they didnt.) So I never had an issue.

In your case I wouldn't feel crazy saying no. Plenty of parents drive their kids. Some kids I went to school with kinder to high school had their parents drive every day. If it's convenient and makes you feel better, who cares?

I don't even think the kindy kids around here can ride the bus. I don't think you're mean at all. If my kids ever ride the bus it won't be until they're a lot older (like maybe 5th or 6th grade and up) and that is MAYBE. Except for field trips and stuff like that but for to and from school there is just not way.

Re: Poll: Am I a terrible, mean mother?

I remember going to k and hating riding the bus, there were big kids that teased me and I used to cry and beg my mom to stay home just because I hated riding the bus, I likes school but the bus ride was horrible. I say drive her for sure, there are plenty of school years ahead for her to ride the bus down the road.
