Inexpensive PP cloth?

What is the least expensive way to go with all post partum cloth? At an average of $13 per pad, and needing to change every 2-3hrs for several days to a week before dropping down to normal mama cloth sizes , it doesn't look like I'll be able to afford it, but I really can't wear paper and plastic pads either. I'll also be buying normal cloth sizes for the first time too, so this can be very expensive. I'd rather pour my money into newborn fluff for the baby!

I would do infant-size prefolds. Just trifold them into snug-fitting underwear. You can use them later for baby.

ETA: I have also thought of sewing a flannel top onto microfiber inserts and fleece on the bottom, but not sure how well it would work.

I used Gerber flats padfolded. NOT trim, and I had a few leaks, but for the most part they worked fabulously. Sometimes I put a (regular absorbency) 'sposie pad underneath in my panties just for extra protection, so you could totally do that if you are sensitive because it's not touching your skin that way.

I had some GEM pp cloth and it was so nice. Comfy and absorbent! Plus her pricing is great

http://gemcloth.webs.com/productsprices.htm she has some gorgeous pad sets in clearance.

ETA: the clearance pp set is sold out! But she is a total sweetie to work with if you get a custom.

If you can sew even a little you can make your own. My sister did this, you can even make them out of old flannel blankets. They actually absorb more than disposables, so you don't really need that much- also most people bleed less using them too. She made 12 and had more than enough! There are free patterns online too!
