I am considering this kind of van, or a 9 passenger Yukon XL or Suburban(these two options actually being my dream car) for our next purchase. Which is still a couple years away. In a big SUV, I want more seats than I have available in my 2006 Toyota Sienna, which seats eight.

I have an Expedition EL with captains and I love it. I test drove one with a bench and it just seemed like a pain, even if it was just moving a booster every time I needed to get to the back.

I've got the suburban with the bench seats. I WANTED captain seats, but DH talked me out of it and I'm so glad he did. I have 3 kids all in carseats and I can put them all across the 2nd row leaving the 3rd empty (removable seats). We just got back from vacation and I'm so thankful for all the space we had, could not have done it with captain chairs.
When not traveling my older 2 are in the 3rd row with the baby in the 2nd row single seat. THe 2nd row bench is then folded up for easy access to the 3rd row. It's much easier to buckle the 3rd row with this set up. I LOATHE climbing in and around the captain chairs in my SIL's minivan to buckle the kids in the back row... PITA.
LOVE my suburban and the mileage is awesome compared to my old 2002 extended trailblazer. The 2008 and higher models have a newly designed engine that switches from 8cyl. to 4cyl when the extra power isn't needed. We avg about 24mpg in it, A-MAY-ZING in a big SUV!

I've had both and love my current captain chairs. I wouldn't do it any other way. My seats do move and I have the option of installing/uninstalling a mini seat in between the captains chairs if needed. My chairs move over for better access to the third row.

Yes. This is a good option too.

I have a gmc Acadia with a bench for the middle row. I like it because I am pregnant with my third and we can sit all three across on the bench and fold down the third row for cargo room, especially for camping! If I had gotten buckets, there would be no way to fit our camping cargo and all three kids. But since you are already at 4 kids, that's another scenario. Good Luck deciding!

I drive a suburban and have captains chairs. I have four kids so two oldest in the third row in a backless booster and high back booster. My youngest two sit in the second row in radians, one rf and one ff.

I do wish I had a bench there instead. But the bench seats are much harder to find.

Bumping this as we finally got a car. We got a Yukon Denali with the captains chairs and I love it.
