Where to buy raw milk?

I am pretty sure it is illegal to sell raw milk in the State of Michigan, so where would I go about looking into buying some. I am not sure I will, just wondering where to start looking. I hear you can purchase a percentage of cow, and get the raw milk from that cow, which would be a way of working around the law. I need to research more anyways.

Re: Where to buy raw milk?

I'm in Indiana, but we have the same law (though it's under review). Raw milk can be sold as "pet food" or you can join a dairy association. The one I belong to sells cow shares, so I technically own 1/8 of one cow. I get a percentage of what milk is produced every week, depending on the size of share I own, but I pay a flat rate throughout the year. This way, the government can't say the association is selling the milk to me. I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have about how it works...

I found my association through LocalHarvest.org.

Re: Where to buy raw milk?

Our guy sells it illegally. Oops. He has a contract with Garelick, and sells a lot of milk to them, but he allows all the locals to come love on the tap ($3 a gallon!) Honestly, we just stumbled across him, so I am not sure where to look!

Sorry, just realized that post is not very helpful.

I don't know where Chelsea MI is in relation to you but you could try to contact Peggy Beals and see where she gets hers (if your nearby Chelsea). She wrote the book on handling raw milk and her DH is doing important research into how healthy raw milk is. He was just out here in NJ testifying to our state legislatures on how good raw milk is. Not that they were listening.

She is at: pegbeals@msn.com

Re: Where to buy raw milk?

Hmmm, I don't think I am that close, but maybe she could steer me in the right direction. Seems like we have a lot of dairy farms in Michigan. I wonder if some of the smaller ones sell.
