Question for all knitting mamas

DS has recently potty learned so this winter is going to be all about the hand knit sweaters. Had the diapering bases down but i have no idea what base I should get for sweaters. Any advice? Would MMW and BFL that I have left over from our diapering days work?

You could use MMW or BFL, but I prefer a superwash base so it's easier to clean. On the other hand, right now I'm knitting a sweater with Gaia Aran, it's so soft and thick, I love it!

Re: Question for all knitting mamas

you can totally use diapering bases however..from what I know..a lot of mamas like to use superwash because (as mentioned by pp) it's easier to clean!

Re: Question for all knitting mamas

MMR is my favorite sweater yarn. It is nice and sturdy and not too thick.

I like superwash but I hand wash all of our knits no matter what they are made out of so it's no less work for me. I also like the way non-superwash yarns take dye (they have more mixed colors) which is another reason I usually choose MMR over superwash for my boys sweaters.

BFL will make a gorgeous sweater () but it will need to be shaved and "babied" quite a bit more then MMR and superwash as it felts quite easily.

I have used diapering bases for sweaters, it seemed like bases like Gaia and bfl actually felt less easily because they arent as rough on them as longies. I love Superwash too though.

Re: Question for all knitting mamas

DD has a lot of sweaters in different bases. I usually make then a size or 2 larger and just fold the cuffs. She wears them from fall to spring. In the first year they look more like sweater dress. Among those that she has worn for 2 years, the cestari ones still look like new. MMW looks fine too but those in SW shows some wear.

Like pp's have said, I prefer superwash for sweaters, but I have definitely used many other bases with no problems, just not as easy to wash.

I use mmw for many of my kids sweaters. I made my son a peter sweater out of mmw and when it gets washed and shaved it literally looks brand new. He wears it for everything too, like football playing outside at the park etc... It does not get babied. My daughter has a few super wash sweaters and I find them to be a bit more delicate. I do baby them more and have had to repair one due to a snag.

I prefer the sw bases for my girls. They have never been hard on any of their colothing, but I prefer the softness, sheen and drape that sw offers.
