collecting leaking milk

so i cut a slit in one of my sports bras and stuck my medela double electric flange in without hooking it up or pumping and it serves a good job to collect anything that leaks when i feed lo on the opposite side.

well lo is now 2 weeks old and i just collected 2 ful oz from one breast alone. i know this is mainly foremilk but i was curious to know if anyone else bothered to collect it?

when ever i add it to a bottle of pump milk he seems to be hungery quicker as i feel its a little more watered down but i hate seeing it go to waste.i also heard of adding it to cereal but hes not old enough yet.

what do you do with the leaked milk?

I collected mine and froze it, unfortunately though, i'd leak around 6-8oz on a normal feed, not at all helpful if you want to get out and about and feed whilst away from home....

I have one of these specifically for this purpose. I've been using it to top up the occasional pumped milk and have been building a freezer stash.

Re: collecting leaking milk

I used a Milkies milk saver to try and collect my leaking milk. Unfortunately I didn't purchase it until DD was a couple months old and by then I wasn't leaking nearly as much as in the beginning. I have a friend whose son is only 2 weeks old and she gets several ounces a day in her milk saver. She then freezes it.

Re: collecting leaking milk

Leaked milk is almost entirely foremilk, so nutritionally it's mostly for hydration and less for fat content.

Milkies is great (not discrete no matter what they tell you, but effective), but it's only got ~1-1.5 ounce capacity. If you're letting down a lot more than that on a side per feeding, then you'll need to feel adept enough to extract, empty and re-stuff, or else set yourself up with a pumping bottle and holding-bra to drip into.
