Adding breastmilk to oatmeal
We are planning on starting dd on solids this week. We are planning to do oatmeal first. I can't wrap my head around how to get the breastmilk from me into the dry oatmeal. Do I have to pump that tiny amount every day? Can I pump a couple ounces and keep in the fridge and use an ounce per day or something like that? Can I warm the milk in the microwave or do I still need to just use warm water? I'm not sure why this is so hard for me to figure out... Help!

Re: Adding breastmilk to oatmeal
Keep it in the fridge and use it just like you would normal milk. I'd do it on the stove vs the microwave. I've also just made it with water and then thinned it out with milk so, you use less.

Re: Adding breastmilk to oatmeal
You can put it in the fridge, but it's really not hard to empress some into a bowl and add the flakes, especially since most babies prefer warm food when starting out since breastmilk is warm.

Re: Adding breastmilk to oatmeal
I pump then put it in the fridge to use for oatmeal. Pumping tiny amounts gave me clogged ducts.

Re: Adding breastmilk to oatmeal
I pumped a little because when I hand expressed it just got all over the place. Kept it in the fridge. If she's got a touchy system then you could warm it up a bit. If you use the micro just make sure it's only a few seconds cuz it gets HOT FAST. but otherwise, cold mixed with the oatmeal is fine. Both my kids liked their food cold. Spit out warm food. Both still prefer cold food. DD will eat cold cooked vegetables any day. And would rather eat checken cold. Even hot dogs. Ds is pretty much the same. He will eat food if it's a little warm, but prefers it cold.

Re: Adding breastmilk to oatmeal
Why not just use water? I used water for rice cereal and oatmeal for my kids with no problems. (I hate pumping if I don't have to!)

Re: Adding breastmilk to oatmeal
You can keep it in the fridge up to 4 days. You could also freeze some in small amounts so you can just thaw little bits here and there. DO NOT heat breastmilk in the microwave. The tiny bit you will use for making oatmeal you can just put in a small bowl and set it inside a larger bowl filled with warm/hot water and it will warm up very quickly. We just started DD on solids and so far have given her only vegetables. I use the water the veggies are steamed in to thin/puree. I don't worry about adding breastmilk to any of the foods since she gets all she wants nursing.

Re: Adding breastmilk to oatmeal
The reason that you can't heat the milk in the microwave is because it destroys the nutrients and immunity that it has. But for testing the waters I don't see the big deal in that, I just do 5 sec or so. My kids never liked water mixed with cereal, milk tastes better, plus its already a flavor they are familliar with. I pump for work once a week so I usually have milk on hand. But i used to use the formula samples I got too.
