Asking for a refund after payment has been sent

A mama inquired about a diaper bag that I had listed here on DS, sent payment that Friday, and asked when it would be sent out. I told her it would be sent out the following day, printed postage, and had it all packaged up.

We came down with the stomach flu so it didn't go out on Saturday. She emailed me on Sunday asking if it had been sent out. I explained the situation and told her that it would go out on Monday when my DH went to work (which would have been the next business day). She asked for a refund because we had been sick.

I sent a refund because I wasn't sure about DS' rules. But what are the rules about this? Am I required to send a refund before the item is even sent out? Now I'm waiting on a refund from USPS for the postage and had to transfer money from our bank account to cover her refund.

hmm you know im not really sure. I dont think you HAVE to refund, ids rules state you have 5 business days to mail out the item. So it doesnt sound like you were slow or breaking any rules

did she say why she wanted a refund? was it just buyers remorse?

Was she afraid sickness would come with the bag or just changed her mind? I would be irritated but would have refunded, just to prevent issues down the road.

Re: Asking for a refund after payment has been sent

Personally, I've refunded for all sorts of looney reasons...I totally get the germ thing though, as I refuse to handle my wool or go into my sewing room when I'm sick. One of our little ones got sick at 1 month old and it was the worst and most preventable thing ever and I couldn't do that to someone's little one just to get it out quicker. I don't feel that you're obligated to refund based on change of mind, but as the PP's said it might just be easier in the long run. Sorry you had to deal with all that !

Yeah, because we were sick.

Maybe her babe has a compromised immune system? Just a thought!

That... is absurd. It's not like you guys used it as a pillow or knee pad while puking. Stomach flu is transferred by bodily fluids.. something i highly doubt would be on the package itself. By the time the package got to her, it wouldnt be any more germy than the last person who handled it, what if the postal worker was sick? I would have told to to wait until you got the postage refund before you could refund her.

While I agree it its over the top for most, I have a niece with a serious heart condition and her mother is justifiably crazy about germs being around her 7mo because if she gets sick it could be life threatening. I can see her doing this and not judging her for it either. Sometimes it is better safe than sorry.

However, in 90% of cases I'd find it ridiculous as well but that's just me.

Not necessarily.

My nephew is severely immuno-compromised because of a terminal, autosomal-recessive mitochondrial disorder called Alpers' Syndrome. A well-meaning visitor's minor runny nose put him in the PICU for 6 weeks and on life-support in 2010.

That's crazy. I would have been annoyed but refunded just to avoid problems.

If someone in her family was immuno-compromised, I'm sure she would say something and it'd be a different story. To me it just sounds like a bad case of buyers remorse..
