Cracked, what do i do?

FTM on my third day. Milk came in last night. Everyone says DS's latch is good but I keep cracking and its becoming SO painful. Is there anything at all I can do?

I've been air drying after every feeding and then applying lanolin. I haven't mastered hand expressing to rub milk into the nipples yet and the more sore I get, the harder it is.

I desperately want to ebf. Son is a champ nurser and my body seems to be cooperating but I don't know if I can keep doing this.

Re: Cracked, what do i do?

put a warm washcloth over your boobs for 5-10 minutes a few times a day, this will soften them as well as make you leak and release some milk.
what brand of lanolin are you using?
Keep going mama, it is hard at first, I wanted to give up so many times too because the pain was too much to handle but I kept going and now 4 months in we are doing great.
I have lanolin packs from the hospital you can have ffs if you want them, pm me. I think I have 8 of them, you can get 2-3 uses out of each one.

I found olive oil or coconut oil worked better for me., if things don't improve within about 2 weeks I would rethink the latch despite what you've been told....a poor latch isn't always ready to spot.

I'll try the washcloths next time, anything to ease the pain.

I'm using lansinoh, is that alright? I can't believe how much I'm going through though. I'll pm you right now.

Ty, I've been thinking of seeing a second LC to see if they see anything different.

If your nipples are cracking you have a problem with either latch or positioning (or both). Contact someone ASAP to help (LLL, LC, etc). The longer you wait, the worse the damage, the longer it will take to heal and the worse it will hurt.

Sounds like a good plan! All of my kids had bad latches and I was told every single one had a good latch (at first, eventually I saw a really great Lactation consultant with my third who recognized How bad the latch was and I realized the problem with my other kids as well.

Re: Cracked, what do i do?

I used heat pads. There are thoosies in target to help. I would put lanolin on right away not dry out/ offfirst. Think of dry skin...warm moist skin absorb better to get cream in to help with dryness. It maybe too u aren't used to it. I know I had to get used to it when I first started but as time went on it got better. I found out it is the same with teething baby as when you first start bring. Good luck. I know I can mainly do one feeding style besides side by side so maybe change that up. Go to Lol meeting other moms vby u might b able to bhelp.

I agree that if you have cracked bleeding nipples something IS wrong with the latch or positioning of the baby. It might be tender with a good latch for the first few weeks but it shouldn't leave you with cracked nipples that hurt the whole time you nurse. I'd seek out another lactation consultant (sometimes the ones at the hospital suck unfortunately).

ETA: My lactation consultant told me coconut oil was good for cracked nipples as it was antibacterial and to avoid too much expressed milk on them as it has a high sugar content and could lead to yeast.

Re: Cracked, what do i do?

Got your pm and pm'd you back I can ship tomorrow.
Some mama's even use a nipple shield while they heal up, maybe try one while you heal then get rid of it so the baby doesn't become dependent on the shield.
I just remembered, i also bought the avent brand boob coolers from babies r us, they helped as well rotating with the hot wash cloths.
These are them, reviews had me iffy but they work really well.
