Re: I threw away DH SS card!
When/if he gets offered the job, or even at the interview, have him ask what they need for ID on the first day of work. Dh does hiring and he needs 2 forms of id and he has a list of what acceptable forms of id are for his company. I think acceptable forms of id are mandated by law (but am not positive) so you might be able to look up online what he can use for your state.

Re: I threw away DH SS card!
Don't order a BC online. Print out the form and mail it. If you need it expedited and I learned this after waiting way to long for my son (both times), call the office and ask them. They told me to priority mail it and add a priority mailer return and they'd expedite it. (of course they got my name wrong and it had to be redone but if you just mail it regularly it could take weeks to months - order two if you can). The state my son was born in told me not to use that online service as it costs 3 times as much and not any quicker (we had to do it twice so I got good at it)
For the SS card, you can use other forms of id like a drivers license, passport, or non-driver id. http://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/ss5doc.htm#r-a-us-documents For employment, if you apply in person, they will often accept a letter social security gives you with the number until you get the copy. We were there for about an hour to transfer/name change/apply for one for my son. It was quick at a busy center.

Re: I threw away DH SS card!
Wow what state costs that much to replace. We had to get certified copies of bc for passports when we went on a trip with the in laws and it was under 15.00 a copy

Re: I threw away DH SS card!
My daughter needed her card and her birth certificate. We did not have the card, so we went down to the SS office and got her one. They gave her a temporary card for employment, and the real one came in the mail within a week or two.
The whole visit to the SS office took less than 40 minutes. I am not sure what you do if you don't have a birth certificate. Those things should be kept in a fireproof safe hidden well from thieves. I was told that robbers don't usually look under the bathroom sink. So, we hide the fireproof safe under the epson salts and Preparation H.

Re: I threw away DH SS card!
Call the office tomorrow before you apply. Does he have a driver's license? If not, he can get a photo id at the motor vehicle admin (but you probably need a bc).

Re: I threw away DH SS card!
When I got my new card after getting married I didn't need my bc. They used my state id and then my marriage license as proof for my name change. I did need my ss card to get my new license with my new name. In Oregon they require a bc for all kinds of things now to prove legal status.

In Florida I needed my birth cert and state ID. I had my wallet lost/stolen in a movie theatre. After 2hrs of shmoozing the SS worker, using my marriage license and birth cert, I convinced her to give me a temporary SS card (required to get an ID) to run to the DMV and get an ID, come back and submit it so I could get a new SS card. Horrifying, as really anyone could've had those and done the same, but I was so glad at the time she let me do that.
How old is your DH's license? I ask, because they used to use your SS# as your license # (in GA anyway). If he can provide the ID and number, he may be able to convince them to keep that on file until he can get his birth cert and get a new SS card. Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using DS Forum
