Diaper Swappers

I just heard them pull something off of one of the shelves with a lovely resounding CRASH.
I'm in the kitchen, actively and knowingly avoiding going in there.

I know if I go up there, I will be faced with the carnage that my two very busy, very strong children have created. No screams or tears yet, so, allow me procrastinate for just a moment longer

and ask...

How do you organize your kids' toys?

We don't store toys in their rooms, mostly for their safety (sleep disorders), but also because it makes for easier clean-up. But, that means that ALL of their toys are in the playroom/living room & the attached closet, and by the end of the day, the place looks like a page out of Where's Waldo.

Any tips for organization?

This is what we have.

Mind you this was right after I built the shelves and before all the toys came in.

But the toy room is our downstairs master suite so we are able to just shut the door if we don't want to look at the mess

But ds knows that everytime before bed his chore is to clean up the floor.

Everything has a basket and it is suppose to go in. But doesn't usually. As long as I have a walkway from the door to the bathroom to do the diapers I'm okay.

**I do know how to spell...my iPod on the other hand does not**

We are planning to make the middle bedroom a play room soon, and there will be shelves with bins for their toys. Right now, however, there are toys in bins (or outside the bins) on the three lowest shelves of a shelf in our living room. There is also a bin for toys under the piano bench. There is a bin for toys under my sewing table (annoying). And we installed pantry shelving in each of their closets to hold toys (either on the shelf or in bins).

The blocks are in a box on casters so they can roll them to whatever area they will play (usually by the front door, which drives DH nuts).

I try to rotate some toys out to the garage, too, to keep things interesting. Our home is 1200 sq ft so the boys don't have a ton of toys, but they have a decent amount.

I keep an eye on DS1 for a day or so at a time and when I see him leaving the Legos for the train set, I stop him and make him clean up the first mess first. If he wants a snack he has to pick up his toys. If we go for a walk or to the store, we have to pick up first, etc.
He's 3 so that day of intensive training doesn't last more than a few days (a week if I'm lucky) before he starts to slip, but he IS improving and it is so worth it to my sanity, and I hope that im instilling some good, life-long habits.

It helps that everything has its place. Even the bigger toys that can't fit on a shelf or in a basket get "parked" on a small rug. There's no ambiguity that way and it's easy to see when something's not in its proper home.

Target!! It worked out so perfectly too because those are our kids' "animals". DS1 has a dog bath towel and a dog piggy bank, DS2 is frogs and DS3 is monkeys. And it just happened that those were the ones they had. It was too perfect to pass up!

The cubbies are 3 of the Closet Maid cubes put together and the bookshelves are rain gutters!

We have a similar set up on a smaller scale except the books go on bookshelves as we could gutter the entire room and still not have enough places to put the books. (as it is, we have to box some up and rotate stock)

I am working to ~~nag at~~ remind the kids to put things away as they go like a PP mentioned.
