Leasing Animals for 4H?

I really want to put the kids in 4H this fall since they'll be old enough. I was talking to another Mom and she mentioned that we could lease a lamb or 2 from them if we wanted. Her daughter does 4H and has sheep. I haven't had a chance to talk to her more about it but do we just keep them for the year or whatever and then give them back? Has anyone done this before? I'm thinking this could be a great option for us since DF is not sold on the idea or animals just for 4H. Thanks!

Re: Leasing Animals for 4H?

In our area some people lease animals (llamas, especially). Typically the owners lease an animal for a year (about $1) and the kids come out to their house and take care of the animal by brushing, helping train, etc. It's a cheap way for kids to have animals without actually having animals... learn responsibility and for the owner to have their animals taken care of! This may vary from area to area, but this is how it is in central IL.

We raise sheep and have done similar things with several kids too. Usually we will give them a ewe lamb and they take care of it, feed it etc then return it after fair. They are not eligible to sell them at fair but they are allowed to keep their premiums.
