He has flown before but always with an adult and not very recently.

He's flying southwest so he's old enough not to be an unaccompanied minor according to their rules. The tickets also have a plane change in Denver which is where I'm really nervous. I looked up the Denver airport and southwest planes are all in one area so he shouldn't have a problem but...

While he does not have his own cellphone we do have several prepaid ones and he will be taking the one that has the largest reception. I'm also debating giving him cash vs a prepaid card. If I do cash I'll send some to his Aunt to give him for the ride home as he likes to spend money.

I think we can get an escort pass that will allow one of us to drop him off at the gate and his uncle to pick him up at the gate but I have to check into that.

As a child, does he have to have an ID to board? I know adults do and we will be getting him one but what if he loses it? (not likely but..)

Re: Kids traveling alone.

When I was younger 9 and up I would fly by myself from NC to NY. I think your DS will be fine. You said he'll have a cell phone he can text/call to keep you posted. I would give him some money for snacks and drink etc. for in the airports since you have to get there so early before the flight.

I'm def. giving him some $ but should I give him cash or a VISA gift card? Would using a gift card be easier/safer or would it be more hassle? WDYT

I would give him a little bit of cash for the airports. or you could give him a pre-paid visa that way he doesnt have to pull cash out count etc. I think he may need cash for stuff on the plane though. As far as when he gets to where he is going I would give him a visa card or could the person he is staying with cover what he will want then you pay them. just a thought

Re: Kids traveling alone.

My first was at age 11, and it was a direct flight. I went to stay with an aunt for a few weeks in the summer. At 14, I would only do direct flights. If the flight gets cancelled and he is stuck somewhere overnight by himself, can he get himself to a hotel for the night and up in the morning? He technically isn't old enough to check into a hotel by himself.

I would do a little on both and a prepaid cell phone.

Maybe give him mostly cash and then load a card with some money that is strictly for emergencies. That way if he misses a connection or some other emergency comes up he'll have some spare money.

Yes, he'll need one if he's not flying as an unaccompanied minor. He can get a state ID since he's too young for a DL. They're usually only like $15 at your DMV.

I am a bit worried about this but there are people (friends, extended family) we can get a hold of who live in Denver if needed. Also, southwest knows he is underage without an adult (although not an "unaccompanied minor" according to their policies) and has contact info in the computer (required to book the ticket) for circumstances such as this.

There are no direct flights from here to where he is going

I flew by myself at age 8 and they didn't have all that help for unaccompanied minors back then that they do now. I was fine. I had traveled a bunch before that though. I would think a 14 year old would be able to manage just fine.
