HOw do I keep my older daughter small/unsafe toys seperate from my the toys for my 7 month old. Both their bedrooms are on second floor but we spend majority of the day on the first floor. I tried just putting all dangerous toy/ or ones with small pieces in a closet but my almost 3 year old was so upset and miserable and just ended up stealing all the baby toys from her sister.
I NEED HELP AND SUGGESTIONS. Im at the point where im about to turn our first floor guest room into a playroom just for the baby and then they would each have their ownp layroom.. there has got to be a simpler safe way to figure this out ![]()

Re: Moms with many?? how to keep toys seperate.
My girls were close enough in age that it didn't matter much, but then there was DS and I also have a dc. What I've always done was to keep toys with small pieces in storage boxes with secure fitting lids. The littles go in a super play-yard (or 2 depending on the # of littles I have at once) and their stuff goes in there. The big kids get their toys out in the main part of the room and the babies can't get out of "baby jail" until all the tiny piece toys are put away.
You could also do it in reverse if your older one would go for it.

Something I have done is only let them play with the toys with little pieces when the baby is sleeping or being worn, or something else that will keep them out of the toys. The rest of the time the little toys are put away and they can play with bigger toys. TBH though we don't have many smaller toys, our house is small and I don't want to constantly be stepping on barbie shoes. The few small toys they have are in rubbermaid containers with lids.

Re: Moms with many?? how to keep toys seperate.
I have that issue as I have older kids and a baby with another baby on the way. I have moved playmobil down to the basement for now (that won't work for you if you don't have one). But, that being said I allow them to bring it up from time to time or play with legos if they put up the baby gate across their room. I have plastic bins for everything and when done, everything goes in the bin. My little one has occasionally gotten into the small stuff but thank goodness someone has always noticed. My kids know that if they don't pick it up and she gets into it, into the trash it goes so they are usually good about keeping up with their things.

I bought locking lid buckets and we don't allow small toys downstairs at all. Small toys must stay in their rooms only.

Re: Moms with many?? how to keep toys seperate.
My older girls are 7 and 9, and all their stuff has small peices! Typically that stuff stays in their rooms (not the playroom) and the baby jsut doesn' go in there. If we are on the same floor, they have to shut the door. In the main playroom (downstairs) pretty much everything is larger and not chokable. The boys are 4, so most of their stuff is too big to choke on, and I don't allow games out at all anymore. They all know to watch for chokables, she's 1 now and no problems so far!
I think you might want to make a place your older DD can play with her stuff where the baby cannot get to it, and make a seprate place for all the kids to play together w/ stuff that's safe.

Re: Moms with many?? how to keep toys seperate.
The only really small toys we have that are unsafe for babies are my son's legos. We have a playroom, so the rule is that if he is going to play with them, they stay in the playroom, and the baby gate has to be up across the door so the baby can't get in there.
If we find any legos out of the room, or see them out without the gate up, the toys go into a week long time out. He has a bin with a lid for them so they are easy to put away and out of her reach. We've only had to take them away a couple of times to get the point across. |
