How do you organize kids puzzles

The wooden kind?

We have a long leather ottoman with a lid that we just stack them in now. They are out of sight which is great, but everytime we take them out we literally have to put every puzzle together because all of the pieces have fallen out and are all over the bottom.

They are all different size too, so that's another issue.

What do you do?

Re: How do you organize kids puzzles

ours are kept on the shelves in the playroom
whole top row is puzzles and learning games

I'm like you...when it gets put away I have to put it together to make sure all the pieces are there. I am not going to keep and store something that isn't complete

Still not enough room for all our puzzles!! We would need twice that many shelves. We have 12 flat puzzles and some have knobs and they are all different sizes and kinds! I'm still trying to figure out how to keep they organized but they are kept out of reach so we play with one at a time until DS is old enough to clean up himself. Would love some suggestions too!

I got some platic letter trays (the kind for desk tops that stack on top of eachother) and glued them together. they sit on the bottom shelf of a bookshelf and work great. DD (20months) can pull the puzzles out and put back in easy -easier than the metal puzzle racks IMO

Re: How do you organize kids puzzles

I bought this:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS.../chrisficti-20

for the puzzles that have knobs, I just take out the pieces with the knob and lay them on top of the puzzle, or I actually can put those pieces back on once they are in the holder.

I have two puzzles that don't fit. One is really thick foam, so it sits on top. And the other is a Melissa and Doug hinge one, but that one is currently offlimits because DD is teething and wants to eat the pieces and it's a REALLY nice puzzle, so it can only be played with when we're playing together and I can watch her.

Re: How do you organize kids puzzles

When the kids were littler, we numbered each puzzle and wrote that number on the back of each piece that matched that puzzle. So, all the Thomas puzzle pieces were #1 to match the puzzle, the Tinkerbell puzzle all had #2 on the back, etc.

As for storage, we just stacked them. Once the puzzles get more complicated, the pieces went in baggies (again still numbered) while the boards would be stacked. Now they are old enough that they are on to jigsaw puzzles and those are a one at a time family project sort of thing.
