Vent: oh my god the whinning!

Right now my 18 month old is screaming at the top of his lungs in his crib because I'm forcing him to take a nap. The last few days he's been waking up in the middle of the night having tantrums, then getting up at 5:15am. From 5:16 until bedtime at 7pm all I hear is whine whine whine. I've taught him to say "please" when he wants something and we're working on sign language and it's coming along slowly, but somehow he still whines and screams constantly. Constantly, mamas. I am soooo tired. It will be a miracle he makes it to his second birthday. My god. Either he's an especially whinny child or I am especially short of patience. Maybe it was a mistake becoming a parent, I don't know. I dread the next two decades until he's grown up and leaves the house. Tell me I'm not alone.

Re: Vent: oh my god the whinning!

You're not alone. We all have days like this.

Take heart - this is so so so so so normal. Something called the 18 month sleep regression. Read more here:

also, the late afternoon whining? It's called the witching hour(s). Read more here:

It helps to start the day off with positive attention. Start filling their cup with love and attention and they should react with less whining for attention. Something that also helps here, if DD is whining, we go to the park or outside or something like that. Big change in environment + curious toddler often = less whining.

This will pass and you will enjoy your child again
but you're not alone, we all have days like this. Sometimes weeks like this.

He sounds tired. Is he napping enough? DD always gets super whiney and irritating when she's not getting enough sleep. There have also been patches here and there where she jut got really whiney for a couple months and then got over it. Most of the time with the hard parenting stuff you can count on the fact that things will change before long and you can learn how to deal with the next thing. I'm lucky in that the things that drive me 'round the bend don't bother DH as much and vise versa. There have still been days where I wondered what I was thinking when I decided to have children. I think everyone has those days occasionally. That is why god invented babysitters....and wine. Hang in there momma.
