Re: Do you let your girls play with Barbie dolls?

I voted no, but my dd is only 3 and hasn't shown any intrest. I have asked people not to buy them for her, and continue to prefer that. Wehave some dolls stashed away that I will give her at some point soon that, like the PPers mentioned, look more like girls than women.

danner~~ I think they're called all hearts club

eta~ sorry only hearts club

I don't think they'll be banned in our house or anything, but I won't be a Barbie pusher either.

Re: Do you let your girls play with Barbie dolls?

DD has been given a few over the years, and she has some of mine from when I was little. She really doesn't care about them, but it wouldn't bother me if she played with them. We have a lot of toys that don't look like "real" anything, so I don't see why Barbie gets so much flack.

DD does like to have spa barbie time-- she brings them out to the kiddie pool and they swim and bath. Usually there is some tragic storyline, involving rescues and drama. This play is reserved for when certain friends come over though. Mostly Barbie sits in the closet.

ODD and DS both play with them. I do not mind barbies (I loved them growing up) and I think the whole body image thing is a weak argument. Girls are being essentially slapped in the face with images of "perfect" women that are REAL so I think the plastic doll is the least of my worries. Plus there are plenty of too skinny and too large people walking around all over the place. I think it is my job to teach my daughter's and son about healthy body image and proper nutrition and weight so if a doll trumps me I have failed miserably.

I saw a comparison once at the Science Museum in Boston comparing Barbies measurements to that of a real woman and if Barbie were an actual living person with those measurements she wouldn't be able to stand up, she wouldn't be able to physically support her own body weight based on her proportions. It has stuck with me and having battled eating disorders in the past and poor body image I don't want to endorse that body type as "ideal" or "perfect". I may be reading too much into a child's toy, but we are all entitled to our opinions. :-)

All of this exactly and much more eloquent that what I would have said...

9m old dd loves her naked thrift store Barbie. She was reaching for it at the thrift store one day, and it was $0.10 so I bought it. Not sure why she is so fascinated, but she is. She "talks" to it and plays with its hair. The feet seem to be great for teething.

I don't care if she wants Barbie and Barbie clothes when she's bigger. It's just not a big deal to me.

There are toys I don't / won't allow (Bratz, for example) but I think Barbie is harmless.

Yes, this I was only thinking Barbies; we do have those, but don't do the monster high, bratz, etc.

Nope, we don't. But I think this probably belongs over in parenting....
