I can honestly say that I do not ever recall even noticing how Barbie bodies compared to real life bodies, nor did I ever compare it to myself. And i have no issues with real males having genitalia rather than a smooth crotch like Ken. I also never compared matchbox cars to real cars, or fake ponies to real ponies. It was a toy. I played with it. I wasn't that complicated as a kid, apparently. Then again, also gave mine Mohawks and such.

I wouldn't have an issue with it. You can get cheapo clothes sets at the dollar store if you don't want to get high price ones. Or look for people getting rid of theirs. Barbie clothes stack up and overflow without you noticing. They replicate, I swear.

I saved all my barbies from when I was young and my daughter plays with them.

Re: Do you let your girls play with Barbie dolls?

I had to check out the OP first to see if this is a revival of an old thread or a new one.

New one........ but I'm not rehashing my thoughts on the issue.

I will probably let my daughter have a barbie if she wants one. I don't think they're a big deal, but I also don't think they're the ideal toy.

I will not allow Bratz or any other new type of doll that looks like the Bratz.

I would hope, for any doll, that my daughter would want the doll to dress modestly because she would want to dress modestly and would want her dolls to look like her.

I would also hope that if she decided on a Barbie, that we would get like a sports barbie or an outdoorsy themed barbie or something. Something that represents an interest she has.

Re: Do you let your girls play with Barbie dolls?

I'm on the fence about it. I am leaning towards yes with restrictions. Some of the outfits are wayyyy too suggestive. I don't think I will be buying DD any myself but if we get them for gifts I'm ok with it unless the clothing is not appropriate. I like the Only Hearts Club dolls much better. I suppose I would consider buying them within reason if she really, really wanted.

Absolutely no Brats, Monster High, or whatever else they come out with by the time she's at the Barbie age.

My daughter never puts the outfits on in the "correct" way anyway. She puts a bikini top with a huge skirt, and mixes and matches! We have a rubbermaid bucket full of clothing, and I doubt we could even determine what the original packaging of any of it would have been. At 5, she grabs a shirt, and a skirt, puts it on, then 3 seconds later takes it off and puts something else on. The fancier the outfit, the better in her eyes.

Yes, as long as the outfits aren't really skimpy.

I will not get them fort girls as there are other dolls out their that I believe are better. I however would not stop her from playing with them at someone else's house or be offended if someone else bought her one.

My 3 year old - Yes, although she isn't into them much yet. She would rather play mlp

Eta my 10 year loves the Monster High Dolls & loves to make clothes for her Barbies. She is quite the stylist I have never liked the Bratz dolls, so we have none.

This exactly. FTR, yes my dd has them. Mostly the mermaid ones and princess ones. They do not get nearly as much play as her stuffed dogs and dinosaurs, though.

Yes, with restrictions.
My DD has several Only Hearts and similar dolls. She also has some of my old Barbies and a few that were given as gifts. I provide appropriate clothing and a realistic house and car, she has lots of great imaginative play.
