Re: Do you let your girls play with Barbie dolls?

I already posted but I want to add that while I don't allow barbies in my house for now it is not because of the body image issue. I don't think my kids are going to learn negative body image from toys.

Nope, but we don't do plastic toys here, either.

Re: Do you let your girls play with Barbie dolls?

I have a DS who is too little for dolls but I would let my child play with them. I remember picking out an outfit for my barbie as a little girl and I guess I picked out lingerie. I remember my mom being like "are you sure you want that one?"

Dd1 got her first barbie for christmas. I allow her to play with her, but she rarely does.

This. Clothes have to be modest though.

I saw a comparison once at the Science Museum in Boston comparing Barbies measurements to that of a real woman and if Barbie were an actual living person with those measurements she wouldn't be able to stand up, she wouldn't be able to physically support her own body weight based on her proportions. It has stuck with me and having battled eating disorders in the past and poor body image I don't want to endorse that body type as "ideal" or "perfect". I may be reading too much into a child's toy, but we are all entitled to our opinions. :-)

This is a very good point and I have gone back and forth on this issue. I have had eating disorders as well and just pray my girls won't ever have to go through that. Thank you for the facts on the museum.

Re: Do you let your girls play with Barbie dolls?

I would let my daughters, OR my sons play with Barbies. I would also let either play with guns. I don't feel that allowing a certain toy encourages a certain behaviour. I do feel like what parents teach/model on a daily basis is what will impact our kids behaviour....and that sometimes a toy, like Barbie, or guns leads to some conversations about morality and choices....but banning a toy IMO is like banning a book. I won't do it.

When dd1 hit roughly 4 1/2...5 ish she became a barbie fanatic. Mostly princesses etc. We do chose modest clothing barbies but that's us . So far dd2 and dd3 could care less. It's all about personality

Yes, with restrictions. Though the restrictions are very lax. We dont let them play with any naked doll, so it must have clothes on.
