Ephedrine in IV?

I waas looking at my hospital bill after DD was born. I saw IV Ephedrine on there, and am wondering if anybody else has heard of this? The only reason I could imagine for it was so that I wouldn't feel hungry for the 20 hours I was in labor (their "policy" was no eating while in labor). Pretty sure the nurse figured out that I wasn't following that policy real well.

Anyhow, I was wondering if anybody knows any legitimate medical reason for this to be in a laboring or immediately PP mother's IV.

We sometimes have to give ephedrine if your blood pressure drops in labor. . . most commonly due to an epidural. Would that make more sense for you?

Re: Ephedrine in IV?

Absolutely. The nurses I had really stunk at communicating, so never mentioned that they were doing anything about my BP, or even that it was low. They'd just come in from time to time and put something (I just assumed more pitocin) into the IV setup.

I'm really sorry you had such poor communication. . . that is a situation where we would DEFINITELY want to let you know since it can adversely affect the baby's heart rate (either blood pressure too low or too high). Sorry mama!

Re: Ephedrine in IV?

I had ephedrine with #2 because my pressure dropped to 60/40 or something ridiculously low like that. They did, however TELL me this!

Sorry you had such bad nurses! And for 20 hours, too!

Re: Ephedrine in IV?

I believe I was given something like this in my IV after my epidural as a test of some sort. My BP & HR both dropped and then went back up.
