Fever?

DS who is 4 started with a fever yesterday afternoon. When I took it with a digital ear thermometer (a Braun thermoscan , not a cheapie) it read 102.6. Gave him tyelnol. Hours later no drop. Gave him another dose at this pint as it was up to 104. It did go down to 102.4 after this. Well flash forward to now...he woke me up to pee (he's very weak and has been quite lethargic all day) and hasn't gone since 11 am yesterday. And he is now 104.3. He's in light shorts PJs and only has a sheet for covering aI not overheating that way. I just found the Motrin and gave him that and have a washcloth on his forehead but I feel like his fever is getting too high. Am I missing something? When do I take him in or call the dr? My kids really don't run fevers ever and certainly never this high Simi have no experience here. Google phd is not helping.

Thanks to anyone who is out there and awake....

Re: How high is too high?

Check with your doc on their guidelines- most have pretty specific guidelines. For ours its basically any fever (over 101.5) that lasts more then 3 days. If they are at 104 and miserable are doc recommends bringing them in. Its good that tylenol helps- you can alternate tylenol and ibuprofen- that might bring it down more. Call your nurses line and see what they say. Hope he feels better soon.

The 104 combined with lethargic and not urinating often enough would have us in.

One word of advice. We had 3 different kind of temps taken. Forehead, underarm and rectally. Rectally was the most reliant.
forehead was 100.8
Underarm was 102.2
Rectally was 103.7
That was all within 2-3 hours
Just something to think about

Agree, check a rectal temp, it is the most accurate. Also, you can try a tepid bath and alternate Tylenol and Motrin. If it still want break call your ped

Re: How high is too high?

How's he doing now? I start to medicate around 103.7 and would worry if it hit 104 and wouldn't come down. Or I medicate if they are obviously feeling badly. If it comes down with Tylenol, I wouldn't worry too much unless it continued for three days. But, by all means, call if it would make you feel better! It doesn't hurt to make a call. Then your office can tell you their preferences. Sorry he's not well! I know that hard.
