I really want to make my niece a twirly rainbow skirt. I'd only need like 6" of each fabric. Usually, I buy at least a half yard when I buy fabric, but 6 colors times half yard is 3 yards of fabric for a toddler size skirt. Kind of excessive, KWIM? Not to mention the extra cost and the fact that I have way too much fabric around the house and don't need more.

Would to be crappy of me to just buy 6" of each fabric? I feel like that would really annoy the people at the cutting counter.

The people at the cutting counter are going to get paid by the hour whether you buy three quarter yards or three half yards. Most of them are cranky anyway. It's practically a cutting counter lady requirement. Get only what you need and repress the urge to apologize when you tell them the yardage.

I buy 1/4 yards all the time. They still have to make just as many cuts.

Yes.

I buy 1/2 yard cuts all the time. Buy what you need, don't feel apologetic about it they are doing their jobs

I would consider buying quarter yards just because it's never straight, no matter how straight it looks when they do it, and you can up loosing inches that you need for your project. Also, if you're prewashing, there may be a little shrinkage. But I agree w/PP, it's their job to cut what you want.

I would just ask for 1/4 yard....like another poster said it's never straight and shrinkage...but I wouldn't feel guilty about it, if they don't like it they can get another job.

I have bought as little as 1/6 of a yard of 12 different fabrics (for a crib quilt). They don't care whether you buy 100 yards or 1/6 yard (I believe that is the smallest amount they're allowed to cut). What do you care if it makes them cranky? You didn't make them take that job. You are actually ensuring job security.

The joanns near me has (or used to havea few years ago, haven't asked in awhile) a minimum 1/4 yard cut rule. I needed like 4" of a fabric once for a project but they required I get 1/4 yd.

I think they make it up as they go along at some of the stores! I've been told different requirements at different locations of the same store. (Example I was told by one store they would do 3 inches and at a location 30 minutes away 1/2 yard.)
