14w old fasinated by eating

and by that I mean watching other people eat. When we're at the dinner table, she will mimic us; bringing her hands to her mouth and making chewing motions w/ her mouth. Does this mean she's ready to start solids? It seems way to early for that though, but she's just enthralled w/ anyone whose eating. I'd much rather wait until 6m or later, but I don't want to dismiss anything either, kwim.

No, it means she's interested. She's learning mentally, she's watching.

But it doesn't mean she's developmentally or physically capable of safely starting solids.

Even if she's grabbing your spoon at 14w, it means she's curious, she likes to put things in her mouth... But not solid feeding readiness signs

You will know without any doubts when she's really ready.

yup.

At 3 months this is the age they do start putting everything into their mouths etc, and many people mistake it for being ready for solids. It is definitely the first step and i wouldn't feed a child who wasn't doing this. But I would wait for other signs too, and also wait until they were at least 5 months.

That's a relief actually. My 4yr old did that when he was ready to start eating solids, but he was right around 6-7m.

I wouldn't start before 4 months but we did cereals at 4 months as my kid seemed interested and he loved it. We just started with cereal once a day (tiny amount) and then progressed very slowly from there. 13 weeks is a bit young. Waiting longer is fine too.

If you pretended to eat a block of wood she would still mimic you. She doesn't know what food is..definitely wait!

Re: 14w old fasinated by eating

She might want to copy you and might even eat if you fed her but that doesn't mean her body physically is ready to handle solids. Give her time for her gut to mature. Maybe give her a baby spoon during dinner so she can pretend she's eating.

My 3.5 month-old also loves to watch us eat, but he will not be getting any solids until around 7 months. Mentally he might be getting there, but it's way too early for his stomach/gut system.

http://kellymom.com/nutrition/starti.../delay-solids/

this talks about sterile gut as a reason to delay. I agree with the pp about her mimicking you. If she was reaching for a sharp knife, you wouldn't give it to her
