Power of positive discipline books?

Right now we threaten our 3 year old a lot. I won't lie. I'm ashamed and embarrassed by it and I know it needs to stop. There are lots of reasons we had to take this path but the long and short is I had to work and we needed her to listen so we both could get sleep/to work on time. It is what it is and it does not work nor am I comfortable with it and now that I'm a SAHM I need to change this behavior in myself. We threaten with time-outs, spanking, taking toys etc... We also still lay on her floor to get her to fall asleep which isn't helping. It took us over 2 hours of threats and grumpiness for her to fall asleep tonight I refuse to let her CIO so instead I get grumpy and spank her. Parent of the year award over here please

SOOOO a friend of mine was telling me about the series of books about positive discipline. Anyone do it? Thoughts?
