Re: Is it just MY son???

My DS was like this. He finally chilled out a bit in the last year or so. He's 7 1/2 now.

I used to stick him in front of the TV hoping that he'd sit still for 10-15 minutes. Sometimes he did, sometimes he didn't. Now he's capable of watching a whole movie in the theater and sitting quietly with legos for an hour at a time. It's LOVELY.

Re: Is it just MY son???

My oldest is like this. Well, not so much now that she's 11. She is like me, though -- small movements even when being "still".

My son is actually the calmest of the bunch. My youngest DD isn't quite as on the go as her big sister was, but people comment all the time on her energy.

Re: Is it just MY son???

I guess I should expect it. I usually move even when I'm "still". And before DS was born I was walking 3 miles, swimming an hour, doing yoga an hour, and dancing an hour nearly every day.

He was SO active in utero, and I wondered if that would carry over.... Yep, sure did!

Re: Is it just MY son???

My 2 1/2 year old is like this.. he slowed down a tiny bit when his brother was born 10 months ago. We used to live in an apartment on the top floor.. my neighbor came up and asked what I feed my son because all they could hear was him running back and forth all day slamming toys around. Ya... we had to move into a house across the country since we couldn't afford a house in California.

Re: Is it just MY son???

Yes that is my oldest. We joke that he is literally incapable of being still, even when asleep. What we have found over the years is that although it is counter intuitive, him getting more exercise or going outside to "get it out of his system" actually makes it worse. If he is engaged in a quieter activity (painting, drawing, play-doh, legos etc. ) he can concentrate and stay focused on it for a while. It seems to bring that frantic energy level down to a manageable level. Now he doesn't actually stop moving during this time, still rolling around, still in and out of the chair etc. but it's not out of control.

We're not trying to change him, just give him a way to focus that need to move or have his hands, body constantly doing something in a way that doesn't isolate him or make it difficult to listen to directions. So much better at 5. I do remember how exhausting he was at 2 though. Super normal for "spirited kids" and nothing to worry about.
