Afraid to poop on the potty...

DS1 turned 3 at the end of March. Shortly after his birthday, he started showing interest in PL'ing and, at this point, he is pretty well trained as far as peeing in the potty (when he's awake, still in diapers for naps and nighttime).

We are really struggling with the pooping, though. He knows when he has to poop, tells me, and I put him right on the potty. But his is so afraid to push (he'll tell me "I'm falling Mommy!") that he won't go and he'll ask for a diaper.

I know this isn't an uncommon problem. So... if you dealt with it, what finally worked to help your child not be afraid to poop on the potty? We've tried the little potty seat (that sits on top of the regular toilet seat) and that hasn't worked. We haven't tried the little stand-alone potty. I was trying to avoid it, but if that worked for a lot of mamas, I'm willing....

thanks!

My DS took a few extra months before being comfortable pooping on the potty. He would always squeeze and say "I can't" lol. I just let it happen on its own. I didn't push. Did he have accidents, yes, but if I put him in pull ups he would revert on being teetee trained. Does your DS normally stand to poop? I think some kids are not relaxed enough to poop on the potty, especially when they normally stand or lean over something to do it. You could maybe try letting him stand over the potty. I tried that with DS but it didn't work, I just had to wait and one day he started pooping on the potty. Sorry, momma, I don't think I'm much help, lol.

With our DS the key was making sure his feet could touch the ground. I don't think I could go with my feet dangling in the air, turns out neither could DS. Once we gave him a step to put his feet on he felt much more comfortable sitting there.

Yes, a step stool is a big help.

If you've ever had to use a raised toilet seat, it will help you realize how uncomfortable it is to dangle up there.
