Puffed rice or puffed wheat are good choices, if you're wanting all-natural, less-sugar. Kix cereal is a good one too, my babies like it.

Re: Alternative to. Puffs

We've never bought puffs so I don't know what they're like, exactly, but we love Brother's All-Natural Fruit Crisps. They're packages of freeze dried fruit, you can get them at Walmart. They are so good and the only ingredient is fruit! No sugar, no preservatives. Despite the name, they are soft, not crunchy like dried fruit, and if held in the mouth would probably dissolve. We love them for out and about. I'm a visual person, so here's a picture I yanked from Amazon, so you know what you're looking for in the store:

We give our little guy Cheerios or Kix. We did puffs for a bit but they're too darn expensive. My 8mo has no teeth but mows them down

We love Puffs! Now that DS is older we also do Multi-Grain Cheerios (get 2 boxes from WIC every month) and he loves them. I just started the 8 month old I watch with puffs, last week he gagged and spit it out, this week he chewed one up and wanted more! Yay!

Thanks for the puffed rice recommendation. I got my dd some today instead of another thing of happy baby puffs and she gobbled them up. They are smaller than puffs too which I think is great for fine motor development!

Re: Alternative to. Puffs

As PP said, freeze dried fruit and veggies are a great snack! We buy the Market Pantry brand from Target. Some have added sugar, but a lot don't, so just check the labels. The bananas are probably DS's favorite, but he also really likes the apples, peas and corn.
Target also sells the Happy Baby puffs, which were DS's first solid food after the purees.

Re: Alternative to. Puffs

DS2 still likes the Happy Baby puffs. He doesn't need them, but I still buy them because they don't get all slimy and gross like Cheerios.
