Glasses for a 5yo
We just ordered DD's first pair of glasses. Anyone have advice on making sure we don't go through a pair a week? I cannot see this ending well. She's starting kindergarten in a few weeks. On a good note, I was pleasantly surprised by how much the cost has come down since I've been in glasses. They were only $90, no insurance.

Re: Glasses for a 5yo
No advice on the preservation factor (my dd age 5) will be getting hers soon too but for cheap replacements/backups- zenni's online- they have $8 rx glasses (we buy nicer ones for us adults but even then theyre only $50ish a pair
Here's the website-http://www.zennioptical.com

I was just looking at that site! I think we will be ordering 1-2 pair for backups.

My dd is 5 and has glasses. We have only lost one pair and it was from my 2 year old grabbing them off her face.
She wears them full time and we just take them off after she falls asleep. We have had no issues at all.

Re: Glasses for a 5yo
Kearnan started wearing his at 7 which is a little older but he is also ASD. He has broken 1 pair in almost 4 years and I attribute that to the eye doctor talking us into a pair that looped around his ears. The loop broke not the glasses themselves. I would have preferred just regular glasses or the kind with a sport strap if falling off his face was truly a concern (we replaced them with plain glasses and he has yet to lose a pair since). So far all of his glasses since have been covered by medicaid but I think we will buy his next pair from zenni because the options of medicaid covered optometrists in our area stinks. I would rather pay OOP and get treated like a human being. I will probably just take him to my ophthalmologist if I can.

Re: Glasses for a 5yo
I started wearing glasses when I was 5, my mom expressed this concern to the eye doctor, and he told her that since my vision was so bad I probably wouldnt be misplacing them. He was right. So depending on how bad the vision is, you may not have an issue. I made sure I put them in the same place every night. If I had fallen asleep with them on, and someone would put them in a different spot, then I wouldnt be able to find them. If she does loose them, well then I second the Zinni site. Wish we had that when I was younger, my glasses were so expensive.

Re: Glasses for a 5yo
My vision was horrible as well. I know I was in contacts by 5th grade, and wore glasses for years before that. He said she is likely on the same path I was on. He said if she were to take the DMV vision test right now, she'd be borderline. By the time she's old enough to drive, she'll be in bad shape.

Walmart replaces broken glasses for free for the first year. I'd also get a second pair just in case. I have worn glasses since first grade and broken many
