We looked at a house in a really nice neighborhood that we wouldn't otherwise be able to afford. As soon as we walked in the cloying smell of urine attacked. The carpeting was obviously from the 1980s.
But the really screwed up thing was that the listing agent gave me this blank look when I mentioned the pervasive smell of urine. Then she told me she didn't detect a smell! It kinda pissed (ha) me off since it was so obvious and the owner was sitting in the living room with an enormous malamute on a leash...

We saw some lovely homes as well when we were in the market. My favorite was one where we could not go into any of the bedrooms or the backyard. There were signs on each closed door.
"VICIOUS DOG IN HERE. DO NOT ENTER."
"CAT SCRATCHES. DO NOT ENTER."
"DOG SCARED OF PEOPLE. DO NOT ENTER"
and then the patio door said "DO NOT ENTER. BEWARE OF DOGS."

We were like, how many dogs can they possibly have? And then the photos on the wall were of this very nice looking older couple with like 6 dogs. We could only see the kitchen, and there was dog food and puppy pads all over the floor.

Why even show it?

LOL. Be kind guys! I am trying to SELL a house, with 3 under 7 1 husband, and 1 mother in law living with me! As much as I try, this house is NEVER spotless. Seriously, I'm ashamed. When our other was for sale, it was PERFECT. 24/7. I mopped everytime I left the house, all dishes were done before bed, etc etc. It could have been shown at the drop of a hat. This one? Not so much.

One house we looked at had a room under the stairs...it was, unexpectedly, a water closet. The room was probably 10'x10' & the toilet was smack dab in the middle of the room w/ nothing else in there. No sink, nothing. Weird

Hey, I bought that house!! There was a toilet on ds's closet. It's no longer there. My plumber did a wth when he removed all the piping.

haha, this brings back "fond" memories from house hunting. Yes, some are terrible!

I remember one that REEKED of dog pee, and it was so messy inside... sink and counters full of dishes, beds unmade, toys everywhere, etc. The house was being rented out, and I would have been so angry if I was the homeowner/landlord and knew that the people left such a mess out when they knew people were coming. This wasn't just a few toys and breakfast dishes out, either. We were walking around piles of stuff. And then they just took their kids outside and stood around all awkwardly while we did a quick walk through. I'm sure it's annoying if you're renting a house that's for sale, but still!

This reminds me- when I was 18 and living alone in my first apartment the landlord put the place up for sale. I made sure it was spotless, but I had *no* idea you were supposed to leave for showings. I showed those poor people around and wouldn't let them in the bathroom because I had a contraband kitten hiding in there.

So yea, it's weird when you go to view a house and its occupants are there, but I try not to be too hard on them (in my head.) Some folks, especially renters who probably have never bought or sold a house, just never got the memo.
