Emma just started wearing glasses 3 weeks ago. She will be 5 in 2 weeks. Our main problem is trying to get her to keep them on! She hates them! I am going to order another pair from one of the discount places online. Noah began wearing them at 3 and we went through 4 pair the first year.

Emma has been real good about taking care of them. I think it is a girl thing, Noah was so destructive with his.

Most places have great warranties on children's glasses. You can get an extra pair at Walmart for under $100.

here is my little lady sporting her new glasses.

Re: Glasses for a 5yo

DS2 is 2.5 and wears glasses. Now that he's used to them, he leaves them alone, but we actually did go through a pair the first week. We opted to invest in the indestructible ones...cost us $130 out the door from JC Penney. They can be bent and twisted and pulled and nothing will happen

Re: Glasses for a 5yo

My 5 year old wears glasses but he's been in them since he was 1 so he's very comfortable with them now. No advice other than to always have a back up pair so if one breaks they aren't without glasses. Lately the only issues are minor that can be fixed up in a few minutes at the Optometrist.

Re: Glasses for a 5yo

I have had 2 children that got glasses at 5, and one that got glasses at 6. We buy our glasses from Wal-Mart because they are inexpensive and covered under warranty for a year. I thought for sure my oldest would have gone through several pair of glasses due to being a kid, as she tends to be very rough on everything, but she's only had one pair of glasses break in the almost 7 years she's been wearing them. We took them down to Wal-Mart and got the lenses placed in another pair of frames and she was all set. Took an hour altogether. My son has been wearing glasses for 3 years now and his broke this year, but it was just the ear piece, so we just used some super glue and put them back together. Can't tell they broke, aside from the fact you can't fold that piece in anymore. As they are always on his face, except for sleeping and showering, it's not a problem.

We went to Walmart and ordered her first pair. I will get another pair or two from Zinni. Thanks for all the tips!

One of the sites has an offer right now for a free pair if you are a Facebook fan. I forgot which one but I will look later and let you know. I went and got Emma's script today so I can order her a pair .

Re: Glasses for a 5yo

My niece has been wearing them since that age and they were worried but she has done amazingly well with them. I use to work in optical so I would say having a 2nd pair is necessary. Even if they are warrantied, a lot of breaks can not be fixed the same day so I would have 2 pairs for sure.

She is adorable!!

My 5yo got glasses last fall. We oped to get one pair of "nice" glasses, and one pair of indestructible Miraflex glasses. He wears the Miraflex to school, and the other on weekends/special occasions. Almost a year later, and both pairs are still going strong. Both frames are still in great shape, so if he needs a prescription change in August we will just get new lenses put in his glasses. Unfortunately, due to his prescription, we have not find an online store that can make glasses for him.

This is him in his Miraflex:

And these are his wire frames:

Re: Glasses for a 5yo

My DS started wearing glasses when he was 2.5. His vision was so bad, though, that he couldn't NOT wear them, so we didn't have any issues with him misplacing them. We always bought two pairs at a time. The only time he has ever broken them was due to other children - getting hit in the face with a ball at recess, someone pushing him down and his glasses falling off, etc. Nothing he has ever done has caused a problem with his glasses.
