Suggestions to get baby to latch??

My son is 4 months old now, he was tongue tied and his pediatrian just guggested we have surgery to release it at his 3 month check up. I was getting him to latch on once or twice a week for the first 3 months without any problems but constant nursing because of the tongue issue left me with sore and bleeding nipples so he's only had breast milk but from a bottle mostly. Now that we are able to breast feed without extreamly pain he wants nothing to do with it, after the surgery he would scream every time I tried to breast feed him and now he isn't as bad but won't even try to latch on, he licks the milk off when I try but will not latch. Suggestions anyone? Pumping is super inconvenient and getting old.

That's a tough one, mama. DS2 had similar issues, but only received bottles for 2 days. He never relatched, even after working with LCs and LLL for months. He was just used to the bottle, which is completely different than nursing from the breast.

I would suggest trying a nipple shield, and trying to get him to latch on when he's asleep and not hungry. Also, get in contact with an IBCLC and/or LLL. They're a great resource!

I used a nipple shield and a syringe w feeding tube. I put the tube under the shield and put some bm or formula in the shield so there was something there for the baby IMMEDIATELY. It cut down the intense and pain of the baby sucking and nothing coming out or baby frustrated bc no milk there. Eventually we worked it out. She was on both bottle and boob from the beginning.
