Ham bones?

I've got 2 in the freezer and would like to use them, but with it being a million degrees outside, I have no desire to make soup. Any ideas?

I agree! When you cook beans put the ham bone in. Ham bones can add a lot of flavor especially to baked beans!

Re: Ham bones?

I always think of ham & bean soup. Baked beans never occurred to me. Now, anyone got a baked bean recipe--made from dry beans?

Do you want a boston baked bean type recipe (hearty thick) or what I call watery baked beans? Do you want stove top cooking or crock pot recipe?
How I use the ham bone is in place of bacon

Probably more like a boston baked bean. I like the consistency of Bush's baked beans, but I avoid cans, HFCS, GMOs and about everything else that is probably in one of those cans. It can be either stove top or crockpot. I'm home all day, so I can do either. I'm getting all thinking about beans.

Re: Ham bones?

You make a Cold potato and Leak Soup with the ham bone which is Simply making it hot letting it Cool Pureeing it up and serving it vichyssoise style (Cold Potato soup)
Heres My recipe makes a GOOD 8 2Cup servings Make it in the crockpot you dont heat your house Finish it with a Few drops of White Truffle Oil and MMMMMM its Gourmet I make it as often as I can, but we dont eat a Lot of ham so I have to wait for Friends and Family to Give me their Ham bones...
************************************************** **************

Cheesy Potato and Leek Soup with Ham

8 Medium Potatoes Peeled and 2inch Diced
3 Leeks Split Rinsed and Finely Sliced whites and tender Yellows
2 Celery Hearts Leaves and Ribs
3 Cans of Chicken stock
1 Hickory Smoked Ham-bone with about 1/2c of Meat left on the bone
1 can of Whole kernel Corn Not drained

Put all Ingredients in the crock pot and Let it cook about 4 hours on High checking
halfway through then Go back to check and make sure bone and Potatoes are
still covered with Liquid If not add water 1/2 at a Time....

When Meat has Fallen off the Bone Remove and discard any Bone or fat Then
Chop the Meat that is in Large chunks into Bite sized Pieces and put back
into Crock pot(If you leave it alone it will eventually Shred its self also.)
Add 2 Cans of Condensed Cheese soup Mix till smoothish
Potatoes should be breaking down at this point Give it a Taste
see what kind of Seasonings you need to add. I added 1 Tsp each of
black pepper and Salt
Also at this point you should NOT have added any seasonings
just let the Bone and stock flavor it and salt it...

Since I'm not adding Bacon I'm going to taste it and see if I should add some
liquid smoke if so add 1 cap full NO more or it will taste like a Fire Pit
and No longer like Potato soup. (I didn't use it this time)
I'm also lowing it and leaving it for 2-4 Hours on Low

You can adjust your consistency of your soup by doing a few simple things:

~Smash a few potatoes into your soup the starches will Naturally Thicken it.
~ add a Corn starch Slurry of 1/4C Milk or cold water and 3 tbsp Cornstarch
~You can Thin it out by diluting with 1/2C milk at a time

Serve with Fresh Bread, and salad...
Garnish with Bacon,Chives,green Onions,Sour Cream,Shredded Cheddar cheese

I adapted this to My family's Liking you can add anything you want to this or
take anything away Happy eating

Bush's vegetarian baked beans don't have HFCS, at least. (Prolly BPA, but we only eat them occasionally.)
