Difficulty breathing during c-section?

Has anyone else experienced this? Did you pass out or did oxygen help? I was thinking of asking for oxygen from the beginning. I'm totally freaked out about this, especially since I'm going to have an umbilical hernia repair as well and the spinal might be higher than normal. Thanks.

Re: Difficulty breathing during c-section?

I had it a little for each and deep breaths with a bit more oxygen did help. During my 3rd section it was really bad. I told the anesthesiologist he looked at the equipment and quietly told everyone to step away from the table then next thing I knew I was on my side for about 5 minutes. Apparently my pressure dropped pretty low pretty quickly.

All that to say, tell the anesthesiologist each time you feel off, they act quickly.

Good luck and congrats on your newbie.

Do they not give you oxygen through the nose thing from the beginning? They have with me with all 3 c-sections, right from the start. I just thought it was protocol...

I didn't get oxygen through the nose with any of my c/s, the heavy feeling on the chest and having a hard time breathing I thought was normal, It's scary. Share your fears and concerns right off the bat with them

I didn't get oxegyn at all and no difficulties breathing at all. Definitely let them know when it happens.

Re: Difficulty breathing during c-section?

I had oxygen from the start. I had an emergency c-section, and a spinal. I don't know if that had anything to do with it though.

My first c/s I had oxygen from the start but that made me feel like icouldnt breathe. Once they let me take it off I could breathe way better. My 2nd c/s I was adamant on not getting the oxygen so they didn't force me to and I had no issues with breathing at all. In fact it was a much better experience.

2 c sections, no O2. I never had trouble breathing , just felt pushing as both babies were stuck under my rib cage. They were both breech and really wedged in

Re: Difficulty breathing during c-section?

Both times I had a hard time breathing. They didn't tell me it was going to happen but apparently it is totally normal. I seriously thought I was dying and started to panic. It was pretty awful but the second time around I expected it to happen and took long deep breaths. They keep a very close eye on your oxygen levels so if you were, in fact, not breathing they would know. It is a scary feeling though!
