Is this ammonia?

This morning I took off my daughters (3 months) overnight diaper and it reeked of cat piss. So badly that within an hour I rinsed it in the sink because it was so gross. Problem solving went on. "Smells like cat pee. What makes cat pee smell that way? Ammonia isn't it? Oh yeah, cloth diapers can have ammonia issues. I bet it's ammonia." So just confirm for me, ammonia, right?

Yes. You would def know it if it was ammonia...if it was just a night time diaper thats pretty common...i rinse night time diapers as soon as i take them off for stinky reasons...if all your diapers start smelling bad it might be ammonia and bleach will take care of it

However, a few uses prior to developing ammonia, I've noticed that diapers do start to smell very strong.

Things I've done to battle ammonia: boiling the inserts (always effective, regular maintenance, time-consuming), wet pail + bleach rinse on laundry day, and switching to powdered detergent.

I don't know why powdered is better than liquid, but switching to powdered Tide Free and Gentle, instead of using the liquid, has made a noticeable difference.

I have found the BEST product to do all the work of stripping diapers for you is RLR Laundry Treatment. It strips out the detergent and mineral buildup, and all you do is add a scoop to your washer w/ the detergent! It is so wonderful, I am in cloth heaven!!
