Labor before a planned csection

I have to have a csection with this baby (baby number three). Baby two did a number on me and I can't give burth again.

But what happens if you go into labor before the scheduled date? Do you just go to the hospital as quick as you can? Are there any concerns or things I should look out for?

That has happened to me twice, and yes, I just went straight to the hospital. I have a vertical incision so things moved very quickly after getting there. They gave me terbutaline with #3 to stop my contractions since the Dr was nervous about me laboring against the vertical incision.

I did this with my twins. I was in active labor when I got there dilated to 5. It went so quickly. The doctor rushed me into the O.R. because in 45 minutes I was completely dilated. I was scheduled that day. I had my section and was done before I was supposed to even be at the hospital.

Re: Labor before a planned csection

I went into labor with my 3rd son before my c-section date. The trouble was that he wasn't dilating me (he was a 12 lber and was never going to come out... I stalled with my first son like that) and so they couldn't consider me in active labor until I went from 1 cm to at least 1-1/2 cm. Because they couldn't consider me in active labor, they couldn't call in the OR team to do the c-section (hospital protocol). I labored 2-1/2 days with regular back contx to only stay at 1 cm dilated. They'd check the heartbeat and hook me up and everything only to send me home (while I was having contx and telling them that I could feel him lodging against my pelvic bone just like my first son did). Finally, my doctor saw me, had pity, and did the c-section a day early. When they pulled him out, he had a white indent on his forehead of my pelvis for 3 days and they profusely apologized for not believing I was in active labor.

I would not recommend laboring before the c-section if you can help it! The next c-section I scheduled for 39 weeks instead of 40 weeks!

Re: Labor before a planned csection

It never happened to me (thankfully) however I was worried about it this last time. For me they take my baby at 38 weeks (because of the history of classical c-section and because I am 1 hour from the hospital). That really cuts down the risk.

Be sure to talk to your doctor about your concerns. They may be able to help alleviate your fears.

Re: Labor before a planned csection

It happened to my friend, her baby was butt first but by the time she go to the hostpial he was too far down the birth canal he spent a year seeing specialist because his hips popped out (and he was in leg braces for just over a year). Depending on your reasonc for a c-section it can be differant...

Re: Labor before a planned csection

I opted for a repeat csection and went into labor three days before I was scheduled. The LD nurse asked if I was sure I didn't want to try for a vbac and when I declined, they prepped me and rolled me into the or quickly. I was progressing quickly, so from the time I walked through the doors to the time I got in the OR was about 40 minutes.

Mine should be scheduled for 39 weeks. I just wish I had a crystal ball. It's reassuring they can prep you and get you deleivered fast.

2 of my friends were having repeat C/S.
Both started having contractions before the c/s. They just went in to get checked and they just did the c/s then.
