The OP mentioned that the child can open doors already, and her dilemma is whether it's okay to get a childproof doorknob cover.

OP, I had the same problem with my DD (who would climb out of her crib) and open the door. My problem was further compounded by the fact that my DD could (and would!) open the door to our deck and go outside in the backyard. She was also capable of pushing a chair to unlatch the gate and go outside in the front yard, by a busy street. Only you know if your own LO is capable of this sort of dangerous mischief, or if he is otherwise safe, but I ended up turning my DD's knob around so that it locked from the outside. It was more stressful to me to go to bed at night with it unlocked, thinking that she could just get up in the middle of the night and wander around the house, or worse, the yard or street!

Another thing that helped at a later age was The Tot Clock.

Thank you! He can't open any other doors once out of his room that could be dangerous. He could go to his playroom or our room (and he always goes straight to our room). I'm thinking about turning it backwards so it locks from the outside, and I would be able to unlock it before bed. Looks like we'll be trying some different things this week!
