I added it to my siggy because, like many Christian moms, I'm out and proud! I've read many studies indicating the actual number of non-believers in america is larger than the number of people in individual religions. Technically there are more "non-belivers" than catholics, protestants, jews, etc. But most people shy away from the name atheist because it has such negative connotations. Many people identify as agnostic or non-religious because it is much more culturally acceptable. The truth is I have met VERY few true agnostics in my lifetime, and a whole lot of self-loathing atheists!

Stupid question - what's the difference between agnostic & atheist? I know I could google. We are non-religious 'catholics', I am struggling with where to send odd to school - we only have 2 in town...the catholic one is nicer - bigger rooms, smaller class sizes and not k-12. Bah.

Atheism is a complete lack of belief in any gods, based on all available evidence (or lack thereof).

Agnostics believe that they do not know whether gods exist or do not, or that the evidence is not clear enough one way or the other.
