Would a gain of 13 lbs concern
Bit of history first. Dd was born 7 lbs
By the time she was 20 mos she only weighed 22 lbs. she was really tiny. After ds was born and she was tandem nursing she gained to weigh 35 lbs. She was seriously chubby complete with wrist rolls. After that she grew up and thinned out. She didn't gain at all for several years. She was still under 40 lbs going into grade one. At last check 6 mos ago she was 4 ft and 52 lbs right around her 7th birthday Yesterday we went to the doctor and they weighed / measured her. She is 4 ft 1 and 65 lbs! I knew she had gained some but don't own a scale. She is defiantly chubby again. On the child BMI she is 90. I don't know if I should be concerned. I don't want to give her a complex. |

Re: Would a gain of 13 lbs concern
I'm assuming the doctor did blood work and everything checked out okay? I guess unless there were health issues including intolerance to food, significant environmental changes I wouldn't be too worried personally. Then again you could always get a second opinion from another professional if not get any tests done otherwise.
Our DD is five and a half and she probably gained no more than four pounds in the last year. She rarely eats meat and eats like a vegetarian for the most part. I think she's around 34 lbs or so right now but tall. |

Well I don't think you just give a child a comes by watching their weight and making healthy choices.
My kids know fruit is a snack. Popsicle is a rare treat. And they have no complex. If you are concerned, and do offer foods that are too high in calories for her (be honest with yourself. So many people have ZERO idea how much they feed their kids. So privately track) try to cut back junk or really high fatty food. Junk is hard because what is junk to me, may not be to you. So I find tracking and reading labels is the only way. So kids just go through chunky phases too. I just say be real with yourself. If its diet and not just hormonal changes, make the changes for her. Subtly and confidently. You never even need to mention weight. Diet. Or anything like that.

I guess this is new territory for me. I have a high metabolism as does my mom, gramma ect. I can eat pretty well what ever I please and not gain a pound. I never had thoughts about weight or body issues in my life and I don't want DD to either.
I see some little girls including my niece that have very unhealthy views of weight. She is 2 years older and says she is fat that she is not going to eat needs to exercise to lose weight. Weighs herself at MILS house and let's out an exaggerated sigh that she weighs so much. I don't want that for my kids. Growing up we always had junk food available and ate a lot of pizza, fries, subs from my families restaurant. I have always had a sweet tooth. I try to eat a mostly healthy diet. ( not much packaged and whole foods as much as possible ) We don't have much junk food in the house. ( I consider junk food as granola bars the occasional monthly bag of chips. ) She is a bit of a carb junky though with pasta and rice. She will eat it until she feels sick if we let her. She has I think some sensory issues as she will literally vomit at the thought of eating something she perceives as gross. The appointment was an allergy specialist who said she has no allergies according to the skin test. No blood work has been done as our doctor isn't even aware of the gain yet. |

Re: Would a gain of 13 lbs concern
I guess this would be a concern; probably two separate issues but I would look into it with a professional.

Re: Would a gain of 13 lbs concern
Ya her eating/vomit thing is strange. I wouldn't feed her what you would eat yourself but it sounds like you just eat whatever. I think you need to evaluate your lifestyle

When I was growing up we ate a lot at my families restaurant. In my house I have really strived to have healthy whole foods. Whole grains except bagels because they don't make while grain flavored ones. No cereal. Little to no prepared foods/snacks in my house period. No pop very little juice. I have a sweet tooth but mostly keep it to after the kids are in bed. I also had to go on a total elimination diet due to my younger nursing DD2 sensitivities. She has had a very sensitive gag reflex since she was small. I have asked doctors about it several times over the years. The only response I have gotten is some people are more sensitive than others. I'm asking if the weight gain with no change in diet is a concern. |

Re: Would a gain of 13 lbs concern
I would hold off another month or two and see where she is. It's quite possible she simply bulked up in order to shoot up a few inches. If you can manage it, keep tabs on how much she's eating and see if you can find it's more than you thought or if it changes.

Re: Would a gain of 13 lbs concern
I was a chunky kid...like super fat my whole childhood. My mom cried all the time about having a fat ugly child... then at 12 I grew 6 inches and that was that, hourglass figure, and one hottie of a teen. So she may just be bulking up to grow.
