Re: YOUR closet - how many clothes??

Only keep clothing that is truly flattering on your body even colors. Just because a color or fashion is in style doesn't mean it will be next winter or that it looks good on your body. I also read a Tip that said to hang up all of your clothes, turn the hangers backwards and any hangers that are still facing the wrong direction in 3 months, get rid of it. Obviously this wouldn't apply to your winter clothes if you were in summer durin your experiment.

2 pair pajamas
10 pair socks
10 pair underwear
1 pair daily tennis shoes
1 pair casual sandals
1 pair flip flops
1 pair dressy winter boots
1 pair dressy summer sandals

1 pair waterproof thinsulate winter boots
1 pair muck shoes
1 casual winter coat

Re: YOUR closet - how many clothes??

I just got rid of two trash bags. This is from being preggo with twins, and the many sizes I was the 2 years after. I'm finally to my pre twin weight. (surgery will be required for my pre twin body. ) and I'm buying new clothes.

I shop sales, so I get j crew or banana republic clothes at old navy prices. It's work though, I have to be constantly checking to see what's on sale and in my size. Boden and lands end are also raved about, I need to check them out.

I want to read this book, it's about the real cost of our cheap clothes. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/re.../dp/1591844614

I just got rid of 2 trashbags too. I still have a lot but it's a start.

I have:

3 maxi dresses
2 cold weather dresses
4 skirts
1 denim jacket
3 cardigans
3 sweaters
4 pair pants
3 pair jeans
5 pair shorts
6 tunics
8 short-sleeved shirts
8 long-sleeved shirts

2 pairs leather boots (Frye and some other brand, will last forever)
2 pair sneakers (I exercise at home)
2 pair sandals (Chaco and they last FOREVER)
4 pair flats (silver, gold, black, brown)
3 pair heels (gold, nude, metallic)
2 belts (brown, black)

1 fall/spring jacket
3 light sport jackets for running or just around.
2 parkas, one long one short (too many coats)
1 pair winter boots
1 pair boots for sledding/shoveling snow, etc. But I've had those forEVER, they never get worn out.

I still have way too many workout clothes but one thing at a time. Typing it out actually makes me realize I can cut it down further. My shoes are all pretty good quality, I mean most of them would last for years on end because I am picky about shoes. Most of my clothes are good quality. I think if I wore them more often before washing they would last longer as well.

Re: YOUR closet - how many clothes??

I was REALLY minimal a bit ago....just a few jeans, tops and around the house stuff. BUT, then my grandfather died. Amid my grief, I had to go shopping for clothes for 4 days of services and the burial. I resolved that I would NEVER be unprepared for an event again. Now, my wardrobe includes a selection of items that can be mix and matched for any ocassion, and a summer and winter suit. I also have a formal dress for my husbands work or a great date out. I am happy wth my choices and happy knowing that I will NEVER be able to say I have nothing to wear. Now, I have not gone overboard. Everything still fits in 3 dresser drawers and a small hanging closet rack about 2 1/2 ft long ( see my blog for pics: http://www.homemademinimal.blogspot.com but, I can now honestly say I actually WEAR everything in my cupboard. My tip is to try putting all the clothes you don't think you wear in a bag or box and live out of the ones you "do" think you use. Go retrieve items as necessary when you "need" them. But, after 3 months, for sure after 6, you can safely donate whatever is left. Also, when you achieve happiness with your wardroe, don't ever buy something new without purging another item like it so you don't slowly cram your wardrobe up again.

Re: YOUR closet - how many clothes??

Since I'm nursing, I buy nursing shirts from Expressiva.com because I love their tops and they do good sales now and again. I have about 12 shirts, 10 skirts, 10 pants/ shorts, 3 sweaters, 2 sweatshirts.

I like to buy from places like GAP and J Crew when they are having super sales because their stuff is nice and really lasts. J Crew jeans are my total fave (I'm 6' and it is hard to find jeans!!!).

Overall, though, I just think I like to have enough that my closet is organized and not squished. Plus, everything has to be loved- I got rid of ALL my frumpy clothes and 'fat day' clothes and that has made the biggest difference!!!

Oh, and dh and I neither of us has a dresser. We each have a walk-in closet with undies and socks folded on a shelf. Makes it easier tosee what yoy have, nothing forgotten in a botton drawer.

10 everyday shirts
3 nice blouses
Handful of nostalgic tshirts
2 knee length skirts, one dressy, one casual
2 ankle skirts, one dressy, one casual
2 pairs jeans
2 pairs capris
One pair each sandals, boots, heels, sneakers, and flip flops
One nice jacket
Two hoodies

I live in the south, so not a lot of winter clothes needed, and I have church every Sunday to dress up for. I used to have 5 dresses for church instead of the skirts, but I'm nursing for the foreseeable future and didn't want them cluttering my closet.

I also live next to an outlet mall, so that's where I get most of my clothes.
